From Rags to Riches - My Insignia OB story

Having jumped on the Insignia craze last month - I was figuring what to
do with this $45 dollar speaker after I returned to my Brines Ft-1600MkII.

After reading DMason's OB thread I decided to take out the Insignia 2 way
driver and mount it OB style. After all, with all the rain this weekend on the
east coast - I could use a fun project!

So my son and I ran out to Home Depo and picked up 2 (48" x 12") shelves and
some L brackets, and screws.

We removed the driver and crossover from the Insignia.  We cut a 5 3/4" hole
12" down from the top of the 48" shelve and mounted the Insignia driver and
crossover.  We then screwed in some large L brackets to make temporary floor
supports.

It seemed like another science project - if you have ever been there.
I guess it took an hour and a half to put them all together.

We wired them up with some simple zip cord and placed them about 3 feet
from the back walls.  They are connected to a RWA SB2/Clari-T system.

I am more then pleased with the results.  Vocals are incredible (an artist
came over to lesson to his cd and commented on his vocal reproduction)
The wall was full with sound.  And there is a 3 dimensionality that I haven't
heard since I first listened to the JVC F10 - very cool.

Yes bass is light but there are so many others things going on that I don't
need more.  I will play with other speaker cables abit to try to warm the
the sound up.

And what a difference a few inches makes. Similar to box speakers -too
close to the back wall and they are dead - too far out and they are too thin.
OB' s just tell you very quickly.  When you hit the spot the sound is balanced
and the imaging is happening.

Overall very worth while and a great and easy intro into OB.

DAY 2 - Switched speaker cables to some MIT T2 cables which warmed
things up a bit.  Also switched over to higher power amps - lost some
detail but have more bottom.  I would say 50 - 60 hz bass.
System is very satisfying on day 2, and will keep as main system for the
immediate future.   A lot better sounding then the boxed originals!

Day 3 - Vocals are starting to sound exaggerated.  Also if I hold the boards
tightly the bass improves - time for some stiffer wood.

So going to redo baffles in MDF or harder wood. Also add wings.
I guess I am starting the journey.

I wouldn't go out and buy this driver but it was fun using it for a OB.
I do have some RS classic single drivers that I will try next.

Hey!

Niceeee!  8) How about get 4 more wood paneles and some hinges to give them wings? :D This should improve the low-end a bit... well not that low. :D

Man! Seem like everyone is on a OB wagon now a days eh? :D

Anyway, thanks for sharing and enjoy.

Take care,

Jeff,

Thanks for the post - what a great way to start with OB.
48x12 is close to the dimension I want to use....
I must have missed out on the Insignia thing last month - I was taking a self-imposed break from audio gear for a while.

I'll do a search on the Insignia - cheers!

Good start Jeff. If you are willing to put in a bit of effort you can achieve very amazing results. What is the driver?

Is this what we're talking about here?:

The driver apparently comes from a $50/pair Insignia (an in-house Best Buy brand) NS-B2111 PC speaker.  It is rated at 50- 20,000 Hz, 90 dB/w/m, 8 ohms, 120 watt "peak power", 18 inches tall x 12 inches wide.

The black polyfilled bass reflex enclosure itself is impressive at this price, with MDF construction, curved non-parallel side walls that create nearly a triangular footprint, good binding posts, and 13 lb weight.  The driver consists of a 6.5” carbon fiber woofer out with a 0.8 inch coaxial silk tweeter.  This speaker has generated significant interest on DIYAudio.com forums and  AudioAsylum.com forums.  Here's the Best Buy link:

Yes, I'd suggest adding wings (of different widths).  That would allow you to pull the speaker farther from the rear wall to allow for deeper soundstage and decrease image blurring by increasing the delay between front and rear soundwaves.

BTW, how does the sound compare between the cabinet and open baffle?

If a "few inches" makes a difference for OB, imagine what difference the design of a speaker cabinet makes.  (Hint to lovers of simple squarish sealed or ported boxes versus pipes or rear loaded horns.)

How does the Insignia compare with the Infinity Primus 150 ? You can pick up a pair of those from Circuit city for $80 right now . Are they $30 better then the Insignias ?

Only if they will work on an open baffle.  :thumb:
