A universal has come to mean it plays "all" discs universally, but in reality specifically redbook, DVD-A and SACD (and DVD of course)...universal does not mean it is region-free necessarily.   In this case, it can be made region-free by the following:

MAKING THE OPPO DV-970HD REGION-FREE

   1. Using the remote, press Setup
   2. Press 9210 in quick sucession
   3. Press 0
   4. Press Setup to exit
