TacT & Tubes??
« on: 28 Aug 2006, 03:49 pm »
I was wondering if anyone @ AudioCircle has experienced the Tact RCS 2.2 XP with Tube Monoblocs? I have recently moved from my loft that had a dedicated listening to a smaller condo. My system is now in the living room. I'm not able to use as much acoustic treatments as I had before. I know my sound could be improved with the room correction products. The two I'm most interested in are the Tact room correction and the Lyngdorf's RoomPerfect(ex TacT engineer/designer). Any and all suggestions on room correction are welcomed.

Thanks,

Gary

I will be trying a Tact 2.2x and Dodd 120 mono amps in the next week or so.

I will let you know how that works out.

I used a TacT 2.0 with an Audio Research D-70II and a Transcendent Sound T-16 OTL (both stereo amps) with good success.  However, I now have the TacT feeding an Ack! DAC, which runs through a Melos tubed preamp & prefer the sound that way.  The TacT 2.0 reportedly had a DAC inferior to that in the 2.2x.  Good luck.

My Tact 2.2x has a modified DAC card that is quite good.

The stock DAC card is ok and can be beaten by many stand alone DAC's.

I have a 2.2XP and am currently using with a Yamamoto A-08s down to 60 hz or so and a SS amp below that.  The overall result is excellent but I wouldn't rush into room correction unless you think you really need it.  The XP, though being a "real time" device and easier to adjust than the earlier versions, invites constant tinkering and wondering whether optimization has been achieved.  You have to ask "Do I like this?" rather than "Is this as good as it could be".

My unit is stock and I do not like the stock DAC's.  It sounds much better digital-out to my Ack! 2.0.  Eventually I will go to an Altmann which can handle 192 khz inputs with battery power and non-OS luvin' that is my decided preference.

The TacT units are expensive, even used.  If you don't Need the room correction function, I'd venture there are better choices.  On the other hand, if you're FR is all over the map and it's bothering your ears, take the plunge and prepare to be humbled for a while, as the  learning curve is a bit painful.

Miklorsmith, Thanks for the response. I'm not one for tinkering?? I would like to be like Ronco's chicken cooker. Set it and forget it . Thanks again for the help.

George, I'll be looking for your write up on the Dodd's with the TacT.

Hi Gary,  I'm using a fully modified Tact 2.0S with your same Jolida 3000 amps.  I'm using the internal DAC in the Tact with a modified SB2 - excellent sounds all around.  I find the Tact DAC to be pretty good actually(when modified by Aberdeen Components).  I replaced a Wadia 301 with the Tact DAC & SB2.  I also had a Unison Tube CD player and a Benchmark DAC - I liked the Tact DAC better.  In fact I just had a Monarchy M24 for eval. for about 3 weeks.  The M24 is a tube linestage/DAC - again I prefered the Tact DAC but thats just my ears - ymmv ;)  The Tact drives the Jolidas perfectly - no noise even with the gain on the Tact all the way up.  Since I got the Jolidas I don't even use correction any more - bypass with just a little eq sounds fantastic ;)

I'm using a modified (PS & DAC) Tact 2.2x with some Bruce Moore M50 Monos to good effect. To be fair I'm using the Tubes part of the time and a class D the rest of the time. Generally I find the class D a better fit with my speakers but for some music the tubes can't be touched (especially when I have time to them a proper warm up :D) .

For the same cost as one Altmann 192 DAC, you can get a mauimods.com power supply and have your DAC cards upgraded, all drop-in
replacements. A much bigger improvement, and eliminates the need for extra digital cables.

PS-

"Lyngdorf's RoomPerfect(ex TacT engineer/designer)," is not designed by ex Tact engineers, and is currently only available as part of the TDA2200+ amp, so you can only use it to drive a low pass analog amp.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'm going to try a full loaded RCS 2.2 XP. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again,

Gary

Tony, where did you buy the amp stands that your JD3000's are sitting on?

Garry,  the stands were custom made by Ultrasonic  http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?accsrack&1161378812  Tate is  a real nice guy to work with and the amps stands and rack arrived perfect.
