Here's the deal. I've built my current system around a Squeezebox2 modified by Bolder Cable Company. I got an older version of the mods that are available now, including the basic powersuppliy (which is still pretty heavy duty) and the analog/digital mods w/o the bybees. I have that connected to an EA modded Carver ZR1600 and a pair of Gallo Reference3s with the Gallo bass amp.
It's a great system already, but it's still not quite giving me what I know the Gallos are capable of. The best I've ever heard them sound was when driven by an Audio Research integrated. However, I don't want to go to full tube amplification for several reasons (heat, power, etc). I've also demoed a couple tube preamps and became convinced that was my next upgrade, hence the Modwright SWL (which I haven't heard yet, but I believe the reviews). I'd also really like to have another couple inputs on my system for future components.
THEN, just as I was convinced I knew what to buy, Slimdevices goes and announces the Transporter. Now I'm faced with trying to figure out if my system would sound better with the transporter, or with my current SB2 + the Modwright. Wayne (from Bolder) has always said he thinks the SB sounds best when feeding direct into an amp. But honestly I'm not so sure about that with my system. The Carver is incredibly detailed and incredibly revealing. I've heard how it can benefit from a tube preamp. Perhaps the Transporter would give me the improvement I'm looking for and keep that pure signal path intact (which I like in theory).
I know it's early to ask these questions because the Transproter isn't out yet, but the Modwright's price is going up soon. Any advice?
