Looking for one piece unit (CD, tuner, built in speakers) for second system

OK, I know this isn't audiophile territory, but I'm looking for a small one-piece stereo unit as a basic second system.  I have tried the Polk Audio unit (i-sonic, it is approx. 14" X 9" X 5") but it is either defective (distortion on HF on CD, below average tuner) or simply not ready for prime time.

I've also thought about something like a NAD receiver plus speakers, but the speakers would need to be small yet reasonably good.   Budget = $600 or so.

Thanks.

I'd look at the mini systems from Teac, Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, etc. I have a Teac Reference 100 in the bedroom and it sounds pretty good. The big weakness is the 3 inch low end driver doesn't have any bass. With a $600 budget you can get one of these systems and upgrade the speakers to a pair of PSB or Paradigms if desired.

I believe there is a Denon unit that has a pair of Mission speakers for around $400....has gotten excellent reviews from people who have used it.  I forgot the model number.

It is listed at just $230!  That is a bargain for what it does.

Another one you might be able to get for the money and is basically excellent is a Linn Classik..they have different itinerations but you will need to get your own set of speakers, something that is not hard to do.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions.    You both mentioned Denon, and since I have had their gear before, I went to a local audio/video shop, listened to the D-M33, bought it, brought it home, plugged it in and smiled.  No break in, no warm up, and it sounds very nice.  Really.  Well-balanced speakers.  The little tuner/cd/mini-receiver is solid, with controls that function smoothly.  Tuner seems quiet and pulls in the stations.  I'm surprised.  $500 new.  My wife is happy -- this is really hers.

What good medicine for an audiophile.  Plug and play without fuss.  I'm even using the zip cord it came with (which was pre-stripped for ease of setup).  While it will take discipline to not tweak the thing, I'm having fun just considering never touching it other than hitting play.  And not tracking the hours of break in...and not considering the warm up to optimal operation.
