PMC IB1's vs. IB2's
« on: 15 Aug 2006, 02:41 pm »
Hello

I'd like to hear from those of you who have compared these two models. I know the differences on paper but would like personal experiences and opinions with their characteristics in music and HT. THanks. Dave

I've owned both PMC IB1's and IB2's. I sold my IB1's and kept the IB2's. For context, my room is designed by Rives, so it is heavily treated acoustically speaking, to get the most out of my gear (see gallery for some photos), IB2's are tri amped (Bryston 7BSST's on bass driver, 4BSST split between tweeter and mid range) and speaker cable is the same cable as that found within the speaker cabinet itself - works better than any of the higer end cable that I've tried.

As you know, the primary difference between the 2 speakers is the mid range. The secondary differences are the crossover and cable terminals at the rear of the cabinet.

In terms of listening, the biggest difference I found was added resolution in the mid range which managed to bring the performance more into the room. It seemed less about listening to a CD and more about listening to live performance. I realize that there is quite a bit of cost difference between the 2 speakers and it's not going to be worth it for everyone but if you value this kind of added intimacy with music and you have a high resolution system/room, I highly recommend the IB2's.

Best of luck with your decision.

Thunder,

From your pictures it looks like you have been busy in the last couple of years.
I thought your room used to be red ?

How did you attach you center channel ?

Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve, you're right, I have been rather busy but I'm finally done! The room dimensions are the same but flooring, treatments, set up and equipment (mostly HT related) have changed quite a bit. I am really happy with the result for both HT and 2 channel. Lots of lessons learned through the process.

I had a custom metal bracket made to attach the center speaker to the ceiling. I really prefer the sound in this position versus close to the floor - less localization. Prior to deciding on the bracket, I used a wood platform hooked to the ceiling with some chains and hooks. Once I knew the angle I needed, I had the bracket made. I wanted to make sure that the center lined up with the mains such that to the listening position, they are all exactly time aligned.
