Maggies w/ Stratos?
« on: 26 Jul 2006, 05:13 pm »
Hello

I was thinking about doing some experimenting soon with different speakers to go along with my Odyssey Stratos Plus. I have been using various DIY designs the past few years, but even DIYers seem to love the Magnepan MMGs for the money. I don't doubt the Stratos's ability to drive any speaker, but would appreciate any feedback from those who have heard this combo. BTW, my favorite speakers so far with the Stratos are 'lowly' Dayton BR1s, they seem to appreciate the extra power of a big amp and really open up.

Thank you
J

I can't speak to the maggies, but the Stratos monos make my apogees sing.  I am not looking for any more gear.

If ever in Cleveland stop by for listen.

I have a Stratos Plus and for a short time owned the MMGs, which I planned to use in a second system that never fully materialized, so I sold them off.  I used the Stratos to break them in. They sounded very good indeed for a $550 speaker pair. [I am partial to ribbons.] The Stratos drove them with ease. I suspect the Stratos would do the 3.6's justice as well (although I'm sure the Mono Extremes would mate with them even better). In summary, I think the Stratos has much more power than the MMGs will ever need, and the Stratos' light touch of warmth will mate well with most, if not all, ribbons / planars and similar.

I use the Khartago Mono Extremes with Maggie 1.6QR and I think they mate very well together.

Ran a pair of MMGs for nearly 4 years with my stratos and it was a great combination.  Recently got 1.6s and the stratos is full able to drive those as well.

It would be worth doing a search over on the Planar forum at Audio Asylum, I'm sure I've seen threads on the Stratos/Maggie combos.

My experience is the combination just sings. I've owned a Stratos stereo with the 120k cap upgrade since November of 2001. I have Maggie 1.6QRs which I've always used as the front pair of the home theater rig which functions as the main stereo.

I have upgrade fever and I have been talking to Klaus about updating to the Extreme Monos for the front and turning my original stereo model into a three channel for the surrounds and center. Maggies love current so whatever you do get the cap upgrade. The more juice a power supply has to feed animals this fast the better. If you tell Klaus what you're driving they will help you by re-biasing the amp to make it work at it's best with your speakers. That's an example of special service if I have ever seen one.

Personally, just my opinion, but if you'er considering buying you're going to be pressed to find a better match without taking out a big loan. Excellent combination, excellent service and excellent value.
