Dussun D9 Multi-Channel Integrated Amplifier
« on: 18 Jul 2006, 12:46 am »
I received the Dussun D9 today. I have been interested in a multi-channel integrated amplifier for HT for some time. The first such product that interested me was the Linar Audio Model 10. http://www.hometheatersound.com/equipment/linar_model_10.htm
Since I still have my Outlaw Audio 950/750 HT combo, I'll be comparing the D9 to it.

There are only three multi-channel 5.1 integrated amplifiers that I'm aware of, and they are the Dussun D9, the Linar Audio Model 10, and the Pathos Cinema X. The D9 debuted before the Model 10 and Cinema X according to Ping Pong at AAA-Audio. The lure of integrated multi-channel amplifiers for HT has to do with uncompromising 2ch/5ch sound performance compared to upscale receivers and moderately priced seperates. A pure and simplistic approach without the complexity and sound henderence of a processor. All that is needed is a quality universal DVD player with a good bulit-in Dolby Digital decoder. Preferably, modified units from the likes of HRAM Denon players, http://www.hotrodaudiomods.com/dvdedvd3910.html, or players from SACDmods, http://sacdmods.com, to name a few. These modified palyers will take further advantage of the 2ch/5ch sound. Good 5.1 RCA interconnects are also important and these can be obtained for reasonable prices from companies like Cobalt Cable, http://cobaltcable.com/multi_channel_audio_bundle.htm, and Signal Cable, http://signalcable.com/analoght.html .

The Dussun D9 is an attractive and well built amplifier. The chassis is aluminum with a 1/2 inch brushed aluminum front panel. The side heat sinks are a thick cast aluminum with a unique oval configuration. The front digital display is wide and offers two intensity settings. The display can be read from a good distance. Other features on the front panel include two rows of AV source buttons on the right, a centered large hand volume control, a dispaly intensity button left of dispaly window, a power button lower left, and three buttons to the left and right of the volume control that control mute and 5.1ch audio inputs. http://www.dussun.com/english/d9.html . On the back of the amplifier are two sets of 5.1 RCA audio inputs, 5.1ch preouts and mains for DVD-Audio/SACD, six stereo, two monitor outputs, and numerious video inputs including three component video inputs. The audio and video connections are standard affair for mid-fi amplifiers and pre/pros. There's also an IEC connecter for upgrading from standard power cord.

I will post my findings of the D9 in Critics Circle where I will be comparing it to the Outlaw 950/750 combo that garnered rave reviews a couple of years back.

I am with earlmarc that there are only three multi-channel integrated on the market as I am aware. Sony, McIntosh and some other manufactures build multi-channel preamps. Almost all the DVD or Universal players on the market at this point have Dolby Digital 5.1 analogue outputs, which can be used as sources feed to those kind of the products. I have tried players from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Many players at several hundreds dollars level have 24bits/192kHz DAC.

I am looking for HDTV Tuner with Dolby Digital 5.1 analogue outputs. So far I have no luck to find any. I believe that they will make them soon. Just like earlier DVD players did not have Dolby Digital 5.1 analogue outputs.

Cheers,
Ping

I have heard a HT system at a friend’s house some time ago. It is one of the best HT systems I have ever heard.

Esoteric DV-50S universal player with Dolby Digital 5.1 analogue outputs

McIntosh C45 dual 6 channel switching center, fancy words for pre-amp w/ no decoder, a multi-channel preamp

Cary Cinema 5, 5-channel power amp

The McIntosh is connected with Esoteric using 5 Dolby Digital 5.1 analogue outputs, then with Cary.

My HT setting is Esoteric DV-50S with D9. D9 replaces McIntosh and Cary at a much lower price. I am waiting for a HDTV Tunner with Dolby Digital 5.1 analogue outputs.

Cheers,
Ping

After some research, I decide my next HT upgrade will be: a HDTV tuner and Blu-Ray DVD player. They have Optical and Coax Dolby Digital 5.1 outputs. Go eBay get a Dolby Digital 5.1 processor with /no preamp hook with D9. The processor prices are so good now. One used one for about $100-200, they were sold new close to $1000 several years ago. The new Blu-Ray video technology is simply better. Dolby Digital 5.1 has not changed. This setup will work nice.

The total cost of a HDTV tuner, Blu-Ray DVD player and Dolby Digital 5.1 processor is about half the price of the Esoteric DV-50S I am selling. The video section will be much better; the audio will be compatible with Esoteric.

Cheers,

Ping

Noticed this offering from HRAM. http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ddampsmult&1159843681&demo&3&4&  Looks very similar to the Dussun D9.
