Aksonic drivers - Flush mount or not?
« on: 3 Aug 2006, 08:46 am »
Fellow Aksaphiles,

I'm finally building my Aksonics after a year of trying to find the time. After much mucking about with 3/4 ply and veneer,  I'm at the point of making the holes for the drivers. I've seen lots of pictures with the drivers mounted "on top" of the front panel, but I don't recall seeing any where the drivers are flush mounted.

Personally, I prefer the look of flush mounted drivers, BUT I'd like to know if this would make a difference to the sound of the speaker.

Cheers,

Ron.

I'd at least rebate the tweeter as there are benefits but have found that rebating of the mid woofer has no effect on sound from my experience.

I do it for aesthetic reasons only on mid woofers except when using Peerless HDS drivers which are a pain to rebate due to the flat sides.

Ron,

I flush-mounted my drivers and think they look great.

I am not sure if the link will work, but here is a link showing my driver mounting.  I think they sound great, but I flushmounted them at the start.

Thanks Guys for some great advice.

I'll go for the flush mounting, then.

Rookster, those speakers look great! :thumb: Is the front panel solid, or did you have very flexible veneer for the corners?
I like those stands too, just the thing for an un-carpeted floor.

So, it looks like my Aksonics will be finished just in time to be superseded by the new Aksa transmission line speakers. Oh well, such is progress!

Cheers,

Ron.

Hi Ron,

Hold it!!  :nono: The design does not call for flush mounting;  it's time aligned with the slight rearward angle of the front panel!!

It was designed for the easiest possible build.  Flush mounting can be a nightmare..........  :cuss:

Cheers,

Hugh

Whew!

And there I was, looking for the right router bit when I thought I'd check the forum one last time........

So I won't flush mount the drivers after all!

Thanks for your timely intervention, Hugh

Cheers,

Ron.
