Django TVC passive preamp
« on: 6 Aug 2006, 02:53 pm »
I have become interested in passive preamps that are based on "transformer volume controls."  The Django from the respected Hong Kong web dealer @ http://www.diyhifisupply.com/diyhs_django.htm
is probably the most affordable that I have found.  The model w/o remote that employs the S&B UK permalloy transformers sells for for $1059 plus shipping in kit form.  The much more expensive AudioZone Pre T1 and Music First units employ similar transformers.
I am wondering if anyone out there has built one of these and what were your impressions of both the build process and the final sound quality.  I also wonder if I would be then searching for lower capacitance interconnects for use w/ this unit.
Anyone's thoughts on using TVC based preamps with tube amps would also be of help.  As always, Thanks in advance.

PS-This is not an indication of my dissatisfaction w/ my active tube preamps but the buzz is so positive about TVC that maybe I should try it out?  Since I listen to so much vinyl, I am concerned a bit about taking gain out of my systems.

Since you are experimenting, you might consider the TVC offered by www.PromitheusAudio.com, I believe it is under $400.

Hi
I would like to introduce myself, my name is Nicholas from PromitheusAudio. We are actually a small based audio company based in Malaysia manufacturing TVC preamps and tube and hybrid amplifiers.
I was highlighted to this thread by one of the guys from audiocircle who recently bought a unit for himself. WOuld like to thank fredgarvin for highlighting our website.
Currently we are offering completed TVC PASSIVE PREAMPS including free shipping for USD340.
This kit unlike every other TVC in the market uses a sygnery of components to arrive at the sonic level that are very pleasing to our customers/friends( most of them became friends after lengthy emails.
I personelly believe that audio is a combination of all the parts including chassis, iron, switch, rca socket, bolts and nut and not just one pc of equipment to get the job done (in this case the transformers).
In our preamp we use our own trannies which are made by our trannie expert with pure silver wire leadouts with oversize teflon tubing. The chassis is specially selected wood with resonance control lacquer and slots to breakup the vibration paths. We used rhodium plated rcas for our preamp and 24 poles switches for switching. Be believe every component is important and we used all non-magnetic materials in the preamp
The end result which we got feedback from our friends in audio, is that we have manage to overcome/surpass the S n B trannies in sonics but at a way lower cost. Again this is just what we heard from our customers using django and other S n B trannies.
In short, why not give us a try. Our pricing is reasonable and we stand by our sound. Do drop by our website, drop us a mail if you like to ask any questions.

Thanks
Nicholas

Just last night I ordered a TVC-1 from Nicholas. From what I can see, looking at the materials (M4/M6 silicon steel lams, etc.) and build quality of the transformers, they compare favorably to MagneQuest's, to name one exemplary and well known audio transformer manufacturer.  I'm looking forward to trying this out. :D

Let us know what you think about the Promitheus, passives seem to be in vogue right now and this is a nice price point.

I will definitely report on my impressions after some critical listening. I believe there might be some break-in time on these (there is on the TX-102 versions).
