Turntable selection
« on: 9 Dec 2006, 04:34 am »
Hello to all-I've been window shopping for a turntable to purchase & have some questions...
1)Using Music Direct & the KAB web site I've found 4 manufacturers to choose from...Technics (the 1200 or SLBD units)...Pro-ject (Debut line)..Music Hall (MF & MMF series) and Rega (P series).
Choosing from these,I'm interested in opinions for:ease of use by a newbie...cost & value:I'm coming back into this as an experiment to find out if the sound I hear is worth keeping my record collection.
I'm telling myself I'll be spending $500-$700 & would like something complete & ready to plug & play.
I am using an old Parasound preamp/processor (AVC-1800)
Of these units which would be a best candidate for future cartridge or phono amp upgrades?
Thank You

You might want to add JVC and Denon Direct Drives from the late 70's/early 80's to your potential buy list.

They are very well made, generally had excellent motors and the like and play well.  To boot, many were semi-automatic...so much nicer than letting your stylus wear out by playing on and on until you lift it off/up.

Those with Q-damped arms best (servo or otherwise) of the lot.

They won't run you but $100-$500 (on the very high side)...leaving you lots of coin for a really nice cartridge (and don't scrimp on a cartridge, it matters).   These quality TT's from analog's big budget heydey, before CD, will allow you to have a good table and allow you to purchase more cartridge then you ordinarily would have left in your budget.

It's all just my opinion - but I've been there and back with belt drivers and am currently enjoying a JVC with Q damped arm from the late 70's that I bought for $100.  It's the best, and most adaptable for wide variety of cartridges, turntable I've owned yet.

Enjoy the analog ride, but don't forget to enjoy the tunes  :drums:

Here's a suggestion for buying new, if you're interested.....

SOTA Moonbeam Turntable w/ VLMT Arm; Grado Gold Cartridge; Last Stylus cleaner; and a record brush complete for $700.

Yea, I saw the ending bid. That is obscene for that piece.
Mint /New or otherwise.

Another ridiculous asking price. This was a $495 tone arm back when. I had one a few years back and thought my Incognito, Techno weight beat it on a VPI MKIII.

How about an older Empire 598 II or III? A servo controlled Harmon Kardon T25, T30 would be nice as well. You could also find an older VPI HW-19 for not too much.
