AMPS for Silverline Sonatas
« on: 15 Jun 2006, 08:20 pm »
I currently have Bel Canto M300 amps for my speakers. It sounds nice, good bass, smooth on top. I run directly from a Wadia 830, and have tried preamps (BAT, SF, Classe) in between with no success :(  , loss of bass being the main problem. I have Nordost Red Dawn cables and dedicated circuits.
I am looking even more bass :o  , while maintaining a more liquid mid and high sound I am getting in doses from the Bel Cantos.
I like the small mono amps like:
Nuforce 9
Acoustic Reality 1001
Channel island D200
EVS 250 monos
I am wondering if anyone has heard these listed compared to the Bel Cantos, or not, and how it may fit my needs. I don't know alot about the Ric Schultz EVS amps :?:  , but seem to be the real deal at a good price.
Thanks Z

You might try bi-amping with another pair of M300s. The M300 is a 150 watt into 8 ohm amp, so maybe another pair would make the difference.

Looking at the distortion figures for the two lower bass drivers, I doubt that amplification is the issue. As I'm sure you know, bass interacts with the room more than other frequency regions, so you may well have a room issue.

Which version of the Sonatas do you have?  They are usually quite efficient and work well with any low-powered amp.  I prefer mine with tubes (Rogue Magnum M120) but I'm sure they'd sound great with almost any SET amp.
