Does anyone have any experience with this company? I am looking at their pre.

I had one of their WPL20s with the phono stage.  The phono stage itself was terrific.  The line stage was nice - lots of adjustability to fit your system.

George was very nice to deal with - a definite plus of a small manufacturer can be the personal service.

The preamp sounded great, but cosmetically I would rate mine as a b-stock - some issues with the lettering on the front.

I always wanted to hear their 2a3 amp and their new EL84-based integrated looks  8)

Are you looking at their standard models or in the signature series?

I have George's phono stage. It is excellent and has output adjustments for each channel which is a plus to me. It consists of a seperate powersupply and gain stage.

I think I would be looking at the standard model. Unfortuately I do not have a "listening room" so looks are more important then maybe they should be. The woman is nice enough to put up with my habbit so I have to be nice enough not to put something that looks like it is out of a 50 scifi movie in the living room.

I have his WLA12A preamp. It's a great little unit.  A steal for less than $1000. George has been doing this stuff for a long time, and his products are first rate.

Agreed!  That's the preamp that originally sold me on the superiority of tubes   :D

Some folks like the retro look.

If you look at tubes, consider the type of tube and the circuit.

Fat 8 pin tubes like the 6SN7 or 12SN7 provide natural tone, great musicality, but not the fastest or most detailed.  Smaller 9 pin tubes like the 12AU7 or 12AX7 are more neutral but provide less tube bloom).

Can't recall which, but one of the Mapletree pre-amp reviews outlines the different sounds from CF, SRPP, and passive circuits.

Then there's the synergy between various tubes and circuits.  And don't forget the wide variation of tube cost when it comes time for replacement or if you want to try rolling.

Many of the compromises in audio can be found in tube pre-amps.
