I just received a Paypal payment for my Tempest.  This time, the notification said I need to upgrade to a business or premier account.  That has never happend to me.  Is that normal?

Yes this is normal.  If the amount you are receiving is over $1000 or so then you need to upgrade.   There should be an article in Paypal website about this policy.

Paypal has limits to the amounts a "personal account" can receive in a 30 day period (I think it is $500)

If they monitor your account and you seem to exceed that amount, then you will be "bumped" (forced) to upgrade, and then comes the dreaded 3% fee on every freakin transaction.

I thought is was wierd becasue I took payment via paypal for my Odyssey mono extremes which was a lot more that $1000.  I just went to the Paypal site and upgraded.  Thanks.

If you go into your account (before upgrading) it will "somewhere" list you limit, and is supposed to tell you how much of that limit remains, as well as when the limit "resets" to the full amount.

But I have found that they convienently neglect to show how much you have before reaching your "limit".

If it was a credit card then that's why you had to "upgrade" your account to receive it. The Personal accounts aren't allowed to accept CC payments.

That's why I have 2 PayPal accounts. One for receiving CC payments, and another for non-CC payments (to avoid the 3% fee).

That's excellent way of getting around the system.  I wish I would have done that in the past.  On a second note, I rather stick with PP policy.  Here is what I found at Paypal.

 No. According to PayPal's User Agreement, if you own a Premier/Business account you cannot direct your buyer to pay your Personal account.

Here is the limit for the Personal account set at $500USD.

Why am I receiving emails about my Personal account receiving limit?

 PayPal Personal accounts have limit on the amount of funds they can receive each month.

Depending on the primary currency of the Personal account, the receiving limit is $500.00 USD, $650.00 CAD, €5,000.00 EUR, or £250.00 GBP.

This limit applies to the payment types 'eBay Items', 'Auction Non-eBay', and 'Goods Other' (Website Payments only). Once you have reached your monthly limit, you will need to upgrade your account in order to receive additional payments of these types within the monthly timeframe. All applicable payments which exceed the monthly limit will be placed in accept/deny status. If you do not accept or deny the payment, the buyer can cancel the payment. If no action is taken, the payment is returned to the buyer after 30 days. The limit is reset monthly on the anniversary of your sign up date.

This should apply above for the above limit.  Personal accounts cannot accept debit or credit card payments.

I usually only ask someone to pay w/out using a CC when I sell stuff here or any other non-eBay place. If I'm selling on eBay my Premier account is linked to my eBay account so asking them to pay to a different account would be a pain in the ass & would seem odd to the buyer. So I just let PayPal/eBay get their 3% of my eBay sales.

It's also nice to have a personal account for receiving $ from friends for whatever. I see no need for PayPal to make 3% off of such transactions. They've made plenty of $ off of me as it is...

Once they made it so that you couldn't take a CC payment with a personal account I changed my first account over to premier status and setup a new personal account with one of my other emails & with one of my other bank accounts.

Looks like you can get around the $500 receiving limit for personal accounts if the payment you're accepting is labeled as either "Service" or "Quasi-Cash".

Good to know that's what the current limits are. Was a lot nicer when it was $2,000 per month for personal accounts...

A problem that I see with using personal account is for buyer's protection which is offered in Premier/Business account.
