Questions about GR Research A/V 1 Kit
« on: 25 May 2006, 03:03 am »
Hi

My first post, I want to build my first DIY speaker and after doing a lot of reading between AVS forum and here and I read good reviews on GR Research A/V1 kit. My question is I have a Panasonic XR55 digital amp and it has an option to biamp for Hi and Low freq. Is it posible to modify the A/V1 Kit to have bi-amp terminal to separate Hi and Low freq and still have an impedance of 6 or 8 ohms. Your comments is highly appreciated.

It might be possible but I don't know that I would do it.  I have a friend who has that receiver, I built a pair of AV-3 speakers for myself and we built him a pair of AV-1 speakers.  His setup sounds very nice with the sonicap upgrade, I think I'd stick to that option.....someone else may tell you differently though, but that's my opinion.

Two things on this.

One, there is no need to bi-amp a small speaker like the A/V-1. The small voice coil woofer will not produce a large back EMF. If it were a three-way with a large lower woofer then separating the large lower woofer would be of some value.

Secondly, the A/V-1 takes advantage of a series network. This allows the drivers to share the same network. It keeps phase shifts low and allows the drivers to blend more and sound as if they are one driver. Using a series network means that they cannot be separated.
