Who has built with RS180 & RS28?
« on: 19 May 2006, 01:10 pm »
Has anyone built with the RS180 and RS28 drivers?  I have the drivers and enclosures but not sure which design to go with?  Natalie P,  Dr. k , Modula, RJB....  There are too many choices and I cant pull the trigger on one. Anyone have input?  Here is a good comparison page:

What size enclosure do you have?  That matters in this case.

I think the Natalie P would be the bang for buck, as the Modula MTM has an pretty expensive xo, especially if you go for the Theta version.  I personally think RJB's analysis is flawed, since his measurement of the Modula MTM doesn't match any others.

Christof,

I've built the Seas 27TDFC version of Jon Marsh's Modula M/T, Jon's Natalie P. and Dennis Murphy's new RS 3-way design with the Seas 27TBFC/G tweeter. All are fine speakers but the RS 3-way is hands down my favorite.    As usual, Dennis got it just right. It's amazingly close to a number of very expensive highly regarded speakers in sound quality and could very well be better than many, IMHO. Considering the cost to build, they are a huge bargain.

BTW, I prefer the Seas 27TBFC/G tweeter to the RS28. It has the good qualities everyone loves about the RS28 but has the top end air, the RS 28 is missing. Don't misunderstand my comments because the RS28 is a fine tweeter. The 27TBFC/G just fits my tastes a bit better. BTW, Dennis has both a RS28 and a 27TBFC/G version of his 3-way design. He emailed me yesterday and said the design would be posted on his website sometime this weekend.

If the RS 3-way doesn't fit your needs, go with the Natalie P. It was selected as the best sound in it's class at last fall's Chicago DIY event. It's very nice.  :)

My cabinets are 9" wide, 44" tall and 14" deep.  The actual baffle is piece of solid Wenge 8.5" x 22" and will protrude out about 1/2" from the face of the cabinet very similar to the way Jim Salk uses solids for baffles.  The backs of the cabinets are open so I can install the internal cabinet seperation anywhere I wish inorder to acheive the desired volume of any paticular design.

I already have the RS drivers which I purchased in a flawless transaction from Goskers here at the Circle which really rules out using the Seas 27TDFC tweeter.  I think I will go with the Nat P. as you guys suggested.  My next DIY venture will be Murphy's 3-way.[/i]

Yeah, those boxes sound perfect for the Nat P.  I have considered making a large box for my Modula MTMs to tune them lower, but pecker did such a nice job on my cabinets, it'd feel a shame to waste them.

Hi Christof,

Sorry for drifting off topic in my original reply. I passed over the fact you had already built the cabinets. Goskers is a friend of mine and has been to my house several times. I would build the Natalie P's if I were you. They are very, very nice speakers and you will be pleased with the results.  :thumb:

Best regards,
