Hello Warner!
I passed on the Old Behringer 8024.
The seller wouldnt even answer my question as to what firmware version it was, and if the AES digital board was in it, or not!
The newer 2496 comes with the board standard.
I plan to get one.

I use the Behringer's XLR input from my  SB2/ GW Labs DSP. I tried the optical input and do not feel it sounds nearly as good. However my DVD player is feeding the optical and that works just fine for watching movies.

ka7niq, that was a good choice.  If I can help let me know.  The learning curve on just how to use it is steep. Then to use it properly so you don't do more damage than good takes some knowledge also.

Be sure to get room treatment if you haven't done so before you do anything else. This will make alot of improvement itself. You may be surprised here.  The DEQ 2496 though is the icing on the cake.

Hi Tweaker

Are you connecting both the XLR from the SB2 and the optical from the DVD player at the same time?  I mean do you have to remove one set of wire first prior to connecting the other one.  I have the usual problem of integrating my 2 channel to my 5.1 set up... Currently, my 2 channel is a Wadia 850 connected direct to a pair of AR1001 monoblock driving a pair of RM30.  For 5.1,  my dvd player is connecting to a Denon AV amp, with pre-out from the front channels also to the AR1001 monoblock.   :)

What room treatment would you start with first ?

My sofa is against a wall, and I definately need to damp the rear wall behind my head!
I usually put a pillow on top of the sofa behind my ears when listening.
Makes a difference.

Yep.

Nope.
There's no conflict, if that's what you mean.
The DVD player is going to get plugged into the GW Labs DSP as it has the optical input available now. (Got rid of a DAT player I never really used that was plugged into the DSPs optical input). It will be easier to change back and forth between the DVD player and the SB2 by flicking a switch on the DSP rather than having to navigate a menu on the Behringer to change from one to the other.

Ka7Nig, for room treatments, start with bass traps, then is first reflection points. It will make a HUGE difference. You can make your own or use RealTraps or GIK. Both are excellent products.

FWIW.. When I was going to make some panels out of rigid fiberglass, I stored the materials in the family room corners till I got around to it.  I finally got around to making the panels and taking the stuff out of the family room. The next day my wife told me something was wrong with the stereo in the family room and "it sounded wrong". It was just that the fiberglass was acting as bass traps.

Chris: You need to read up on acoustics. If you're handy at all bass traps and room treatments can be done for much less money. I personally think Ethan Winer's realtraps are a good buy too.

I think treating your room is going to make you wonder what the heck you've been waiting for. The improvements in imaging, bass and tonal balance is clearly audible as an improvement.  Get the wall behind your speakers, first reflection points and bass traps(at least 2) done.  No way can your system sound like it should without them.

In my present room which is fully treated the improvement is dramatic over my last house where I only had 1 bass trap and only a little bit of the front wall behind the speakers treated.
