Omegas for Nearfield listening.....
« on: 10 May 2006, 09:48 pm »
I moved to a new apartment and my listening room has been painfully cut down to 11' by 7' ...with my couch and stereo being opposite along the 11' length....I wondering what model would be best suited for this shamefully small new space.....thanks

Hi Thundernz1,

I'd say go with the Super 3 V2s.  They seem to work well with nearfield listening, are front-ported and can be placed close to the rear and side walls and are still really fast and lack boominess.  I once had them about 10" from the rear wall and the bass was still surprisingly tight and tuneful.

My previous bookshelf speaker, the Triangle Titus 202, was also front ported but became muddy when close to the walls and could get a little fatiguing at times in the top-end.  The Super 3 V2s took care of both problems and demonstrated more natural sounding vocals.  They also have superior build quality (and warranty....10 years!).

Good luck,

What about the XRS?  I was quite well taken with that model at the VTV and is small!  The bass, it was astonishingly fast without being bloaty.  Would the V2s on stands take as much space as the XRS floorstanding?

Hi Bemopti123,

Considering the very small room that thundernz1 has (11' x 7'), I have a feeling that the rear-ported XRS speakers *may* be too bass heavy.  I have found that they are not as forgiving being placed near the walls as the Super 3 V2s.  I own both.

Considering that we're only talking about 7' of width and 11' of length, I say the Super 3 V2 (bookshelf speakers) are the best choice of Omega speakers for this application.

I would also consult Louis about this situation...

Ahhhh, I forgot the bass port in the back of the XRS.  You are right, the front ported V2 is the ticket.

The Super 3's work very well in my 11x13 office. They are better and a fraction of the cost of many other brands I tried. Good luck.

Beware of small floorstanders in small rooms (they can sound too low and get hidden behind furniture).
