Marks on black finish, what to do?
« on: 30 Mar 2006, 09:02 pm »
I had a speaker on my VMPS larger sub and it left some impressions in the black finish.

Is there a good way to smooth these out, possibly by apply more finish?

I have a buyer coming by at 4 today, so any quick help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ian

I don't know if this stuff will work on the sub or not but I was able to remove water rings (from hot mug left without a coaster) from my coffee table. I don't know about physical depression.  May be a clean shine will mitigate the undulation.  http://www.formbys.com/products/face_lift.cfm  I got it from a local Ace Hardware store.

Thanks, I would think that would work well.

Part of the problem is that I'm not really sure what type of finish it is.  Most non-paint finishes have a solvent which will cause the finish to soften and you can buff it with a rag with some of the appropriate solvent and it'll smooth out.  But I don't want to put some paint thinner or alcohol on and then mess up the entire finish.

I have the piano black/black oak finish on the sub.

I knew that it wasn't piano black lacquer finish.   That's why I suggested this product.  I think it would work.  You still have to point it out to the potential buyer but it wouldn't be much of an issue if it looks good after the treatment.  Good luck.

Certainly, this will be full disclosure.  If they're going to set something on the sub anyway, it won't matter.

I imagine the piano black lacquer is as hard as a rock, just like my NHT's finish.

OK it's not 4 yet, so maybe thus will help.

Brian used to tell people to take WD-40 and rub the finish until the scratch or impression was lessened or gone.

Then take Windex and clean off any of the WD-40.

And then a clean soft cloth with pledge will shine it to a glass like finish.

WD-40 - don't leave home without it!

Just for laughs, here's a recipe for refinishing cabinet veneer, taken from an old Sonora Victrola owners manual.

- 1 oz. Turpentine
- 2 oz. Paraffine Oil
- 1 oz. of Benzine

Solution to be applied with a soft cloth, and then, rubbed, along the grain of the wood, UNTIL THROUGHLY DRY, with a clean piece of cheese cloth.

Benzine!  Always have a gallon on hand!

Yuck, yuck...

Keep on rubbin'.
