Slimserver keeps shutting down
« on: 19 Feb 2006, 11:10 pm »
When scrolling through my artists, albums or songs, my Slimserver software will often shut down. I don't have this problem when the Squeezebox is playing music, just when going through the menus. Has anyone else had this problem?

Slimserver v6.2.2
Firmware v29
Wireless signal strengh 62%

The signal strenght seems low, even though I am using a Netgear RangeMax WPN824 router. Could this be causing the problem or is it more likely a bug with the Slimserver software?

It's most likely signal strength - sorry.

I have to disagree about it being the signal strength. 62% is not great but it's not terrible either. I ran as low as 48% before I got a repeater and really had no problems at all. I'm guessing it's a software issue. I'd call or e-mail Slimdevices with your problem. They are very good at responding promptly and problem solving.

I don't think it is the signal strength either.  I think my SB is located in a black hole in my wireless network because I have never gotten a signal strength > 55%, and it's been as low as 38% with no problems.

do you get a BSOD?  what is the error, if you get one?  it is more likely a conflict with your system somewhere shutting it down.  these types of problems can be a PITA to solve, often resulting in reinstalling windows or whatever to reset some of the dlls.

No errors or any other problems. I just right click the SB icon and start Slimserver right back up again.

I think it's your router.  Have you checked the router's log files for frequent disassociations?  You may not notice a quick disassociation/re-association during playback because of buffering, but it would be noticed during menu navigation because the latter requires low latency.  Is this the first time you have ever used a wireless SB, or was it working fine until you changed something recently?

I checked the router log but found no problems that I could tell. There was a new firmware version available that I installed, so hopefully that fixes things.

FWIW I also use the RangeMax WPN824 and haven't had a hiccup of any sort. I'm lucky enough to average 85% signal strength (router is one room up and one across from modded SB2) and I use fixed IP addresses.

Any screen saver or power saving settings on your server which cut in could be causing problems.

I would bet it's your SB box. Try resetting it or reloading the firmware. Does it shut down if you plug it into the router (or move it to right near the router).  You might have to return it and have Slimserver fix or replace it. They're good about returns. All you have to do is pay one way shipping.

I misread your original post.  I thought your SB was shutting down, not slimserver.  Sorry about that.

What does the slimserver log file say?  I don't use Windows, but I think it is found in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer.

After updating my router firmware, I have not had any problems with shutdown.
