Volume control of SB3
« on: 7 Feb 2006, 06:47 am »
I'm experimenting with using the volume control of My Vinnie modded SB3 and using it to directly feed my amps.  I can't adjust the volume level up much  without it being too loud.  My kids are sleeping right now and a volume of 1 is almost too loud.  2 is definately too loud.

I'm using firmware version 15 and the volume scale is 0 to 40.  Do the newer firmwares have more useable volume control?

How is the quality of the SB3 volume control in general?  Am I losing bits or bytes by using such a low setting?

You can use the Slimserver Pre-Amp Volume Control (under Audio settings) to attenuate the output a fixed amount.  It's included in Slimserver 6.2.2 (not sure if in previous versions).  Works well for me.

You'll get much better fidelity if you can keep the vol scale 35-40, as you lose significantly more bits at very low settings.

Pug,
May I know what's the input sensitivity and gain of your amp?

I'm not sure.  They're Odyssey Extreme Monos.

Does the pre-amp volume control setting affect the sound for the worse?

No.  The Pre Amp Volume Control just attenuates the analog RCA output.

I'm no expert at all, but I just did a google.. and read that the input sensitivity of Odyssey Stratos amp is 300mV. I don't know which particular amp it is, but I guess most Odyssey amps should be similar.

The output voltage of SB3 is 1Vrms, meaning that if you run this directly into your amp, your amp should deliver more than its maximum output... this may explain why it's so loud. I'm more worried that this may damage your speakers.

Pls correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Oops.. sorry.. I found this thread, which talked about input sensitivity of the Xtreme amp:
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=3275

1.44V will give full output, i.e. 300W into 8 Ohm.

1V will produce 34Volts, i.e. 144.5W into 8 Ohm.

Depending on your room size.. 144.5W can be really loud.

Does that mean I'm not getting the full power out of my amp?

The preamp volume control doesn't work.  I set it to a few different values, but it made no difference.  Maybe it's because I'm using firmware 15?

Yes, the preamp volume control (attenuator) does not work with FW15.

If the data I got was correct, then the answer is yes.. you did not get the full power out of your amp.
