stratos burn in w/out preamp, and no gain control?
« on: 22 Dec 2005, 04:18 am »
Hey there!,

I just got my sweet looking stratos from the main man Klaus.!!

let me say,

Klaus is so awesome!! (not that this hasnt been said a million times before)
but im saying it for the million and one time.

He worked with a guy like me on a very low budget and got me an amp of my dreams!!! thanks again Klaus im really excited!!....

now I must wait for the burn in...

and here is where my question arises...
can I burn it in without a preamp?... and no speakers connected?

just transport --> dac ---> stratos plus?!?!?

im excited to try and start the burn in process... is this bad for the amp?

thanks !

I was told that it is bad to run an amp without speakers.  It was one of the vendors on this website, but I can't remember who.

If you are anywhere near Ohio I have a set of speakers you could use.  I know what it like to have half a system and no music.
Nothing special, A set of DCM Timeframe 400, I would sell these for $125.00 or you could just use them.

I'm pretty sure you need a resistive load (like speakers) to break the amp in. I have heard of people who simulate speakers (but with no sound) using a bunch of radio shack type components but you would probably need to be pretty confident in what you were doing. I think I saw it somewhere in this forum if you are up for it.

Sonic Impact not only makes tiny little Tripath amps, but they also market NXT speakers (is it NXT?  I think that's the name of the technology).  The basic idea is that a flat panel is excited, and it's the vibrations in the panel that make the sounds.

In particular, Sonic Impact makes these speaker "pads" - just the electronics, which need to be stuck onto some flat panel (cardboard, a picture hanging on the wall etc.) to make any appreciable noise.  They sell for about $20.  I would imagine you could hook up these, and leave them sitting on a cushion (i.e. something that won't resonate) and you could  burn in an amp without any appreciable volume at all.

I suppose it would be ideal to have speakers connected while the amp was on, but the reality is to just leave the amp on (fully "charged") all the time to get burned-in.

If you can let it play at your typical loudness level, all the better.

What I do when I have a new component to burn in is to turn it up as high as the neighbors will allow when I'm not home. Typically this is 95-100dB at the listening position.
