I want to try my hand at upgrading my electronics (NAD1600 pre/tuner, NAD2700 amp, Marantz 6260 SACD player) but am having trouble knowing where to start. I can read a schematic and am very good with a soldering iron. Are there any recommended books or resources? I am in the process of trying to acquire service manuals for the NAD stuff, but have not been able to get a response from vintageaudiomanuals.com.
Thanks for your help.

You can try getting the Marantz SM from them, try calling
630-741-0285
They have helped me in the past.

I don't know of any books, its kind of learn by doing thing.  I would recommend going to modders websites, like tweakaudio, red wine audio, bolder cable, modwright, referenceaudiomods, etc and see what kind of mods they do.  You can borrow ideas from them, even if they don't mod your specific equipment.

Also, diyaudio can be a good source of information, as can audio asylum.  Do a search there for your specific equipment, and see if anything shows up.

I would recommend starting with the Power Supply.  Good sound comes from clean power, so tweaking the PS is mandatory to get good results.  Hexfreds for the bridge diodes, and upgrading the electrolytic caps are simple PS mods.

Not every change will make things sound better, but keep trying, and you will end up with a better system for less money than going retail.

Good luck.
