Linux box for music server
« on: 15 Mar 2006, 06:54 pm »
I've accumulated enough parts to cobble together another simple computer system (DVD and two 200 GB hard drives, plus the usual necessities).  The vast majority of the use of this computer will be to store my FLAC files and to run slimserver.   Ripping FLAC files will be done on another computer.

I'm thinking of trying out linux as an operating system on this box.  Any suggestions or warnings?  I'd like to have it networked (wired) with the rest of my system, which is Windows 2000 or XP.

Slimserver runs very well on Linux. I used it for quite a while before eventually switching to a Mac mini.

The biggest problem you're likely to face is getting Windows to see your Samba shares from the Linux system. In my opinion, it's not a problem with Linux, it's Windows networking that's broken. An alternative would be to download "Windows Services for Unix" and use NFS instead of SMB. Of course, the Windows NFS client isn't all that great either...
