Slimserver problem-Cannot connect to Slimserver
« on: 9 Jan 2006, 12:50 am »
I have been trying to set up my new SB3 and have managed to connect it to the SqeezeNetwork and I'm listening to internet radio through it as I type this.

My problem is that the SB3 will not connect to Slimserver so that I can listen to the music on my hard drive.

Setup goes like this:

Connected to wireless network
Obtains IP address
Select source  RWA-Laptop
Connecting to Slimserver
Cannot connect to Slimserver

Anyone have any suggestions for a solution to this problem?

Thanks, Mike

Do you have a firewall? Address conflicts and firewall configuration are usually the two roadblocks to making a connection.

I have let my firewall down and still can't connect.

If you are using WPA security with a passphrase, ensure that you don't have a space on the end of the passphrase. I went around in circles for a while until I realised that there was a blank space, removed it and all connected fine.

It sounds like you may be trying to connect to Red Wine Audios server instead of your own.  Try holding down the ""+" key immediately after powering on, resetting to factory defaults.  Then go through set up where you name the specific wireles server you wish to connect to and any password.  Should work then.

Thanks fly fish.  I did get a modded box from Red Wine and just now figured out why my laptop was tagged as RWA (thanks for the advice).  I'm on the road, but will try to set it up Tues when I get home.

It is an awesome little device and my music never sounded better. Amazing what can result from releasing the music from the confines of an plastic coated aluminum disc and cd player. Glad you have it up and running.

Glad to hear it worked Mike.  The sound quality of the SB3 with Vinnie's mods will only get better as you put some time in on those Black Gates!

I just got my RWA modded SB3 and I can't connect as well. It is asking for a 'Network Name'.  I could guess all day long but I have no idea what my network name is. And the concept of a network having a name doesn't appear to exist in any Windows XP screen that I have stumbled on. How do I find out my network's name???

Thanks in advance for any help.

I actually left out the fact that the SB3 did identify two networks before I got to the 'network name' bit. It identified my neighbor's network and it identified another one which I assumed had to be the one I wanted to use. After selecting it, it came back after 10 secs. or so and said it failed to connect. So, maybe that is the one I want, but I have to do something else to get this to go further.

Any ideas?

Lots on this on the slimdevices site.  My Netgear router was set for 108mps and the squeezebox will only accept 54.  I spent hours on it and finally called customer service.  Also you need to check the firewall settings on windows xp to allow access.

Bruce,

Are you using a router or connecting directly to another computer that has a wireless card?  The second is called an "ad hoc" network and works well but is a little trickier to set up, e.g., you have to tell XP that this connection, which you name in XP and in SB3's setup, is an adhoc/computer to computer connection.  You can google "setting up an ad hoc network" and find instructions, but essentially under "view wireless networks" when you right click the connection, then "change the order of wireless...", and then "advanced" you indicate that you want to use ad hoc connections.

After you enter the name in the SB3 setup and with the power on, you then connect the computer to the network, and then the sb3.     Hope this helps.
