Anyone else have issues w/ DualDiscs playing? I only have 2, but the cd side won't play in the car or at home (Ayre cx-7e). Not a big deal, as I could copy them to Cdr's - but I'm a bit suprised. I have read where the DualDisc doesn't strictly conform to Redbook standards.

The only dualdiscs I will buy are the Warner Bros which I guess are not designated are true dualdiscs.  Still, some people have had problems with these as well.  I have Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms and have had no problems.  Certain universal player manufacturers have had problems with their players not playing these.  Not a good execution of a concept!!

A buddy of mine was having the same problem with the CD side in his car.  He indicated that the thickness of the disc seemed to be an issue.  I told him to burn a backup copy of it to CD and use that in his car, that way you also protect the original.  He hasn't mentioned it again so I guess it worked out OK, although I haven't done this myself so I can't tell you from personal experience.

I agree.  Althought I have none and won't ever buy one, I know people who have and have had problems.  Everyone talks about the thickness issue.  Someone on one forum weighed them vs. conventional discs and found on avg. they weigh 20% more.  Definitely not a good thing for most transports to be played on a regular basis, unless you don't value your hardware all that much.

Yes they do have their issues. Great concept, just wish they would get it right!
They will play the DVD-A side in my home unit but not the cd side. The cd side plays fine in my car unit. I still will buy them because I like the quality of the sound in my home from the DVD-A anyway. I like DVD-Audios.

Considering both sides are the same as DVD the CD side should be higher quality, more like a SACD or some thing.... If CD players could work better with them then I would assume it would mean they could play better, at least opposed to poor CDs that are only any good on SB setups.

I've vowed never to buy one, BUT...I bought a bunch of used gaming stuff at Disc-Go-Round and filled my punchcard, which I redeemed for a free DualDisc.     It's definately thicker than a normal disc but it plays okay.  The CD side sounded very good but the DVD side was just Dolby Digital, and it seriously sounded like ass.  The disc was "The 5 Browns", five Juliard-trained siblings that play piano.  Good music, but the DD format sucks.

Knock on wood, no problems so far

I have a half-dozen dual discs, and i don't have a DVD-Audio player yet. I bought them because the dual discs don't have the stupid copy protection that the regular CDs do, and for a couple, it was the only way I could purchase them. So far, no problems in my Sony SCD-1 which is a top loader, or in my computer. To protect the DVD side, I've made copies of the CD layer and generally play the copies now.

I'm surprised the Ayre unit has trouble with them, I think I'd contact Ayre and see if they can help with this.

Also, I have no information that suggests the CD layer should, from a technical standpoint, sound any better than a standard CD counterpart. If the CD layer does sound better than average, I'd attribute that to the better than average mastering of the product in order to justify the superior digital characteristics of the DVD-A layer.

Don't know if anyone has seen this:

Very ironic that the biggest supporter at this point is Sony.
