New SB3 problem -- Problem: Can't open file for:
« on: 7 Jan 2006, 10:16 pm »
I've had a SB3 for about 4 weeks.  No problems until today, when, while playing tracks from my Music Folder, the music would stop and then this message would show on the screen:

Problem:  Can't open file for:

After several seconds the title of the track that had been playing would start scrolling across the screen, but there would still be no music.  I've not been able to discern any pattern (it's happened with the first cut on an album, the third, etc. and it's happened at the beginning of cuts and during cuts).  Once it happens with a track it seems to happen that way again and again with that track.

I've tried rebooting the computer, the modem and router, and the SB3 itself, including manually connecting the SB3 when it powers up, but nothing seems to change.  I've even tried re-ripping some of the CDs where this message was popping up and giving them new names in my folder, but that didn't seem to change things.

Any advice on what the heck is going on?

Thanks.

Dave

i am getting the same thing too. Mine always hangs up at the second track. the first plays fine then the rest are garbage. I am currently trying to re-rip one to see how it goes.

My guess is that you have added some new music to your library.  I had the same problem when I ripped a bunch of new CDs.  The slimserver is now confused.  I believe all that should be needed is to rescan the library.  That did not work for me, however.  Instead I removed the slimserver software from my computer (from the control panel - add or remove programs), then reinstalled the software rom the slimdevices web site.  All is well again.

sts9fan,

Reripping will likely not help.  From what I find, the software will play all the songs up to the first one selected.  Since that is usually the first track, everything after that is not able to be opened.  Had you played track 6 first, then you could play 1-6 in the future.  Again, I am assuming this only happens after you added new music.  The only solution I found is to reinstall the software after removing it.

Re-scanning the entire library works for me.  Here's how I did it:

Whenever I need to add more music to the library, I stop the Slim Server, rip the CDs, re-start the server, have the server "Clear library and rescan everything".  Since then, no dropouts will ever take place.

When the Slim Server takes inventory of the music library, collecting data on how many albums and songs etc. there are on your hard drive, it's called "re-scanning the library".  You can also re-scan the library from your SqueezeBox, but I found doing it from the Slim Server (running on your PC) is more thourough.

Thanks for all the responses.  Yes, this did happen (for me, at least) after adding some new music AND after reordering and renaming some of the folders in my music library.  The latter may have been the kicker, since I've been steadily adding new music over the last few weeks without ever having this problem.

I'll try jswallac's and Pauls' suggestions to rescan the library, using the "Clear library and rescan everything" option.  I've had some success in the meantime with deleting files that had problems and re-ripping them, but that seems like a patchwork solution to a broad problem.  I'll try to report back on what happens.

In the meantime, I found the following thread over on the Slim Devices forum -- seems we're not the only ones having the problem.  Slim Devices forum thread

Well, rescanning my library seems to have done the trick for me.  Thanks so much for the advice!!

Sorry to hear that you're still having some problems, sts9fan.  Hope you resolve them soon.

if you rip a new cd or add some music to your library and go to play it by "browsing music folder" with the remote control,  be sure to scann through the entire list of new songs before starting playback.  Scnning through all the songs makes sure to add them to the library.

I hit the same problem where i would rip a cd and then browse to the folder and only the first track would play.  I looked in to the DB (with a SQLLite browser) and saw that only that one song was getting written (completely) to the db,  the other songs in the folder were only partially written, and part of the missinginfo was the file type, so Slimserver couldn't open the files correctly.

I filed a bug and i think the fix is in more recent versions, but again the workaround for this issue is to browse into the folder and look at all the songs  (i.e. hit down arrow to loop through the track listing) before you hit play.

The other workaround is to always use the web interface to browse the new folder because with a single click you can add the whole folder to the playlist, which writes all the track info to the db.

To verify if you're hitting the same bug I was, see if you can search in the DB for one of the songs that won't play.   Chances are that it's not written in the db.

Burt if your DB is borked,  you have to do a full rescan.  The workaround does not fix broken DB's.  it just works for the next time you rip a cd and want to add it to the DB.
