So as to not mess up the BR movie thread I'm bringing this up in it's own thread.

Do any of the first gen BR players output the HD signal over either component or VGA?

I've not been following the BR/HD-DVD war at all as I didn't feel like trying to keep things straight with it all changing every other week.

I'm more apt to pick up a Pioneer deck if I do pick one up this year. Sony deck's are ok, but I don't like them as well as I do Pioneer's.

But I'm not going to change my display as I'm very, very fond of it. And my display only has VGA & component video HD inputs.

Am I SOL as far as BR is concerned? Or should I start looking into SDI mods or some other type of mod to the inputs on my Loewe?

bubba....the Toshiba HD 500.00 player will definitly not do hd via component.

B/R still has this questioned unanswed with a "maybe".

I don't beleive the hi res DD/DTS formats are going to play through anything other than 6 analog cables or hdmi either....but this is not yet based on fact.

Hmm. I'm planning on upgrading my receiver at some point to the VSX-59TXi. So then I'd have i-Link. Nothing has been said yet about Pioneer's BR deck on the audio out?

You can only see it when you are logged in to AVS.

Bubba, that's a great forum...no reason for you not to register there, IMO

I was the first one on my block to purchase a DVD-A and SA-CD player and I can still feel the sting everytime I sit down.  I think I'll sit this one out for quite some time.

Really?  I have quite a few of both DVD-A and SACD.  I wouldn't trade my universal player for all the tea in china. :)

Why....it was mp3 that kept these formats niche.
I got my first sa-cd player in 99...two years before dvd-a even came out and I new it would never be anything other than niche at that time.

Last month there were 120 sa-cd's released in a 32 day period....so its still supported as a niche format.

The lack of marketing and popular new releases for both formats did not help these formats.....but it was free cheap good enough down loaded music that really kept them down.

I agree with what you guys are saying.  But I do find myself buying SA-CD/DVD-A discs that I would normally not purchase because I'm desperate for more Hi-Rez software.

The releases that I truly get excited over are still CD only releases.  I would prefer to be able to buy new releases on DVD-A and SA-CD rather than reissues that I already own on CD or vinyl.

I can't dispute that.  Sometimes I do get an iffy disc simply to hear how it sounds.  But while I'd like to buy more new stuff instead of duplicating my current CD collection, some of the discs I most look forward to are already out on CD.  One example is the Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin."  I have it on CD, but it's coming out on DVD-A in MC on Jan 31st.  That just might be the first music disc I ever preorder.

I've only had my universal player for a few months and I love it for SACD's and DVD-A's.  As long as it stays a strong niche format and new music comes out I'll be happy.

I'll probably get a new format player eventually, even if it's doomed to the same niche-ness, though I expect one (Blu-Ray) to win eventually simply becuase people trust their eyes more than their ears and will see the difference.  Still, I probably won't have the money right away, but oh well.

Hers the first player that I have seen that may do sa-cd...but not dvd-a.
Click on the actual picture of the player, to enlarge it first, and to the right of the Blu Ray symbol, theres an sa-cd symbol.
