Help please with ART DIO humming (what died?)
« on: 27 Dec 2005, 04:33 am »
Hi,  my stock art dio recently starting humming quite audibly all the time (signal off or on, both channels).  It worked fine for months, then kaput.  I visually inspected cables, and they look fine.  Works on three different power supplies with humming.  So I deduce it is the unit itself.  Is there a readily identifiable problem here, or should I sell the unit for someone handy that may want to mod and play around with yesterday's world beater?  I am not handy enough to replace internal parts anyway (beyond something like the tube).  Thanks for any suggestions you can offer guys.  :)

There is a possibility of a bad solder connection, with an air bubble that is causing a vibration noise. To the best of my knowledge there is no fan or moving parts that I know of?

You know Wayne (Wayne right?) from Bolder Cable company could probably not only fix it, but make it much better! Well not that the charge is free but....

Art DIO's are known for being incredibly good DAC's for a cheap price when modded such as Wayne does.

Thanks DoS,  Yes, I know Wayne.  I already have a smART DIO, one of the very first.  THis stock one I had in my headphone rig at work.  I think I will probably just sell this baby to someone who wants to try and mod it themselves, and yes I do agree it is a great DAC, even stock it's quite amazing.

Gee... Dunno.  On the one hand, it's busted.  On the other, it is a pain to box it up and ship.  Is $20 plus shipping too much?  Maybe I ought to trade it with Wayne for some parts or something.  I do want to try and test the A-D direction, at least it may be working for its original application and has some value for pro-audio applications.  I could even use it myself on occasion if it is only a DA problem.  Hmmm....  :?

When I first that I thought it was a smartDIO that needed fixed, I was about to be all excited.

I would attempt to fix it any ways, maybe use it. I however would not want to pay any thing for some thing that may never work, other then shipping. (Money being my reason for that)

There's people who would buy it for $20.  I would, I need the parts.  There are a few people like myself that have messed up the digital board while modding.  If you want to sell it, I'd buy it.

Guys,

If you want to discuss buying/selling rather than fixing could you please take it to PM.

Thanks
