Help in repairing Marantz SR5000 receiver
« on: 16 Dec 2005, 03:15 am »
A little while ago, I shorted the right channel speaker wires which caused my receiver to produce a muted "buzz" and then go into protect mode. I opened up the cover to see if anything apparent happened (blown cap etc.) but didn't find anything. I unplugged all wires going to the amplifier section (board attached to the giant heat sink) of the receiver and powered on the unit. It turned on normally.

I then shut it off, and replugged in the wires from the amp section and turned it back on. It was again in protect mode and after a few seconds, a puff of smoke came up from the amp section. The smoke coincided with the right channel section of the board. I took out my trusty multimeter just to look around and I found that the transistors are likely shot. I started checking out other components (resistors, ICs, caps) and found several additional parts showing abnormal resistances.

Since this involves more than just changing out a 2-3 ICs, I brought the receiver to a repair shop. Upon getting there and explaining the situation, the guy tells me they don't touch machines that have been opened up.

Great.

So now i am trying to figure out what I need to do to get this fixed. I know the problem is only in the right channel section of the board. I have experience in soldering and de-soldering stuff so that's not a problem.

Where I need help is how I should be approaching the problem. Is it enough for me to compare the resistances of various parts and replace them if they are off (compared to, say, the same parts in the left channel)? Is there a systematic approach that repair people use in doing this? Am I missing anything if I do this?

Thanks
