Problem with Cornet output with Ortofon OM 30...Kinda Long..

I posted a while back about this but wonder if there is something I can do to fix this problem.  I was using a Dynavector 10x4 cart, no problem at all with output and gain.  The Dyna had a 2.5mV output and was rated at 47k load impedance.  I can't find the spec sheet on it now but again I had no problem with gain.  The Dyna unfortunately has a broken stylus now so it's done for.  The Ortofon is rated at 4mv output and also 47k load.  The specs on the Ortofon give more info and I'm wondering if there might be something I should be looking at to get a better output.  I am no genius at all the resistances specs, where or what to look for in the Cornet specifically but considering the load resistance is the same between the 2 carts and the output is actually higher on the Ortofon I would think I'd have more gain into my pre.  BTW, I am using a passive preamp, I tried my Dynaco PAS and had no problems with gain but never did anyway with the passive until I tried the OM 30, and an old Shure I tried had no problem either.

OK, the specs on the Ortofon are as follows...

Output voltage:           4mV
Internal Impedance:    1kOhm
Internal Inductance:    580 mH
Load resistance:          47k
Rec load capacitance:  200-400pF

The Dyna specs didn't tell me as much so I have no way of knowing what impedance differences there might be but all the equipment and cables are the same.

Is there something anything I can do to remedy this problem.  At this point I can't afford a new preamp and the passive sounds much much better than the PAS I was using.  And I like the sound of the OM 30 very much.  Oh and the Cornet has stock values, just upgraded caps.

Brian,

I forget, did you try OM30 on another phono stage?  Do we know cart is good?

Figured out part of my problem...

I have 2 stylus assy's for the Ortofon OM cart, one is a 10 which came with it and the other is a 30 which is was an upgrade.  I bought these years ago and when I just put the 10 stylus on the output jumped to a normal level.  I'm not sure why the 30 stylus won't work, perhaps it was for a different cartridge and I just don't remember now.  I don't remember having another Ortofon other than an MC years ago which is a completely different animal.  Needless to say I have some figuring out what to do with the cartridge and the Cornet stays as is regardless.

Sorry for the bother...

Interesting, if the 30 stylus is broken or built for another body, why should it sound so good?  There is something to be learned here.  You've discovered a rare combination of elements to produce good sound.  Even though the output level was way down, something about it was very right, if you know what I mean.

A lot of advancements in this industry are purely accidental.

afaik, you can not run a 30 stylus on a 10 cart...

i have the omp30 cartridge, and i know that the only styli (sic) that i can purchase for the thing are the 30 models...

my guess is that you have an om10 cart, and that is why the 10 stylus works, and the 30 stylus does not...
