Ferro Fluid - Freeze?
« on: 17 Nov 2005, 05:22 pm »
Hi - This might be a Mike questions or perhaps someone else has come across this...

I wonder if there's any danger of the ferro fluid in my aci sapphires freezing and damaging the speaker? I may use them in a vacation home and we close it down between visits in the winter. The temp in the house is likely to get down below freezing.

I tried a couple of searches on the topic and came up empty.

Thanks - Jim

I have a question along the same line. Any thoughts on Armoral or another type of rubber protectant to keep the rubber surrounds in top condition or is that not necessary?

Jim:

No worries. Think of the millions of car audio systems that use ferrofluid in their speakers and are subjected to sub freezing temps on a regular basis . . .  its darn cold here in Wisconsin today! For all you ever want to know about ferrofluid and much more:

Don't do it! Seriously, natural rubber and synthetic rubber surrounds like santoprene are designed to last for MANY years without the use of any coatings, etc. I wouldn't recommend using anything on them at all. If they were to get very dusty etc, you might want to wipe with a damp cloth.
