Constant Directivity and the room

How will the room acoustics be affected by Constant Directivity speakers? It hurts my brain to think about so anyone that's smarter than me I'm willing to listen to. Thanks

CD is a great benefit in any environment, live or highly damped.  The "skirts" of the directivity curve fall off very rapidly after 180 degrees and you can avoid the worst early reflections simply by rotating the speaker on its axis.  In my LEDE environment I use some toe-in but less than before.

You still want to treat first reflection points (all of them), but that's going to be true for any speaker. My guess is - and I'm anxious to get CD working in my system to try it - is that by being less "beamish", there are fewer hotspots where diffusion and absorption become really important, but on the other hand you might want at least some treatment in a few more places. At worst, a LEDE scheme might need the treatments spread out a little more - and might let you get away with less treatment overall, with some luck. It shouldn't be a big deal.

I can imagine a pathological sort of room that gets sympathetic standing waves going more easily with CD speakers, just because there's more energy in places where wasn't so much before. But I can't imagine that's going to be a real world problem for anyone, and it's easy to model and treat. My guess is, if you have any treatments up, you're probably already covered for CD. If you don't, you should probably have them whether you go CD or not.

Bass traps won't change. You'll still always need one more than you have. :-)
