R DES hookup to sub with mono input - help
« on: 29 Aug 2005, 08:22 pm »
Hi,
I have an Outlaw LFM 1 sub.  This is an awesome sub and Outlaw sells a lot of these.
I love the concept of the R DES sub eq device and want to purchase one, but.....how do I hook the R DES to the sub?
The R DES has low level R and L inputs to connect to the preamp outs on my 2 channel system, but the R DES also has R and L low level outputs and my Outlaw sub has only a single mono low level input.
Now what?  How do I connect two into one and can I or do I just use i channel or what is recommended?  Is it possible to use the R DES - I hope so.
Thanks,
Bill

Use an RCA  Y-adaptor to reduce two stereo channels to a single channel.

John, Thanks for the reply.

Can I do this safely?

I know that I asked both Bel Canto and Ayre about doing this with their preamps and they said unequivically that you don't Y  a pair of their preamp outputs together without screwing up the sound or damaging something!
Maybe it's different with Y'ing together the RDES? (I hope so)

Strangely enough it is normally done the "other" way.  That is, taking a mono LFE output and splitting it to stereo for the sub inputs.

Maybe someone else will chime in, if there is a problem going from stereo to single channel.

My preamp only has one output for the sub.  What I would do is put this output into the RDES (select one of the inputs) and run the corresponding output on the RDES to the sub; you'll basically ignore the second input/output of the RDES.  Is your preamp the same?

If you want to run two full range signals to the RDES, then I'm not sure what you can do.  Will the RDES not do this for you?  (I.e., convert two inputs into one output.)

You should use something like a small mixer (~$50) to combine two signals properly.

aarrrggh, I hope this doesn't get too complicated!

All I want to do is run my sub with my 2 channel reference system and use the R DES in between my Bel Canto Pre 2 and my Outlaw LFM 1.

The BC preamp has plenty of extra preamp outputs and they are all stereo R and L.  I can't sum the preamp outputs together as it will screw up the sound of the preamp and may damage it and with the R DES , I wouldn't need to as it has stereo R and L inputs.

Going stereo out of the preamp to the R DES is not a problem, but then can I Y the two R DES outputs down to the single mono input on the Outlaw Sub?  It would seem to me  that if I just use one channel out to the sub, I won't get all the low bass info.

Those are the breaks for buying a sub that doesn't have stereo inputs or a pre-amp that has a mono-sub output that would do the signal mixing for you. You'll need to drop a little bit more cash to do it properly.

You should be able to "Y" the outputs of the R DES with no trouble. It should be isolated through it's D/A A/D stages.

It should not have any effect on your main speakers or on the separation.

Some alternatives would be to either purchace another of the Outlaw woofers and run stereo subs or to sell the Outlaw and get a sub and amp that will accept a stereo input.

I do think a "Y" adaptor would be cheaper :?

Try putting the Y after the R-DES.
