Which Speaker Stands and Cables?
« on: 14 Aug 2005, 11:51 pm »
Hi guys!

Thanks to the advice on these forums, I am getting my Ohm Model Es fully reconditioned, and this made me consider some other upgrades that are probably well-required to make my enjoyance of these speakers the best they can be (that's a terrible sentence, I know).

I spoke with the guy from Ohm and he told me that the speakers should be on stands. He told me that the woofers should be at about the height of the listener.

I also need some speaker cable. I only need about 4-8 feet in length, probably. So... here's what I'm proposing. I have not been in the speaker market nor the stands market for a long time, and I really do not know what is out there that is worthy of purchasing. Could you guys recommend to me speaker stands and cables that run me under 250 dollars all together? Is this a doable price point? (I am not looking for the ultimate, just something that will accomplish what it has to).

The speakers, so people know, are heavy (probably fourty pounds) and the speakers are almost a foot in each way, so the stands will have to be relatively big.

Thanks in advance for all the help!!

-Andrew

I'll let someone else give advice on the speaker wire.

Thanks for all of the quick responses guys! And thank you to flinstones and marbles for the excellent product links!

Those parts-express stands are a killer. I think I'll be getting a pair of those :)

And, in light of the cable recommendations, I actually did a little research for myself and found an audiogon seller who is selling nice 16 gauge wire for 35 bucks for 6ft. I think I'll give it a try, and if I feel the sound is lacking, I'll re-sell them and go higher up. After all, I can't be losing that much money :)

Thanks again guys!

For almost free plus a bit of your time you can also try CAT5 (category 5 communications wire).  Any electronics/computer place sells it.  Many recipes can be found, but I've always just used one of the 4 twisted pairs it comes in per speaker (due to the small gauge some loss of deep bass is expected).  I've used a single pair of cryo'd plenum rated single strand that I snagged on an internet group buy for $20 for 20 feet.  CAT6 is supposed to be better.

I did buy Element Cable speaker cable.  A bit more deep bass but gave up some resolution across the board.  (I'm not a cable guy.)  This is another price busting, reality based cable company that consumers should cheer for versus those who sell various witches brew for big money.

Not familar with your speakers.  Typical advice is to locate the tweeter at ear level.

If you're still contemplating what to get, I'd suggest Canare Star Quad 4S11 speaker cables (give or take a buck a foot at most retailers), and Canadian-made Atlantis Pro 28" speaker stands (AudioAdvisor.com has them on sale).

It's what I use, and all toll for 10' cables and stands set me back $170.

JLM,

You ever try DIY soild core silver on the FTAs? You will be surprised if you've been using CAT 5. I'm not into buying cables as tone controls either..been there done that. I want cables as neutral and transparent as possible. After a good burn in...the difference is very apparent. Your resolution will nearly double..no kidding. There's just more contact and conductivity going on. I notice the volume knob is also set lower than with the CAT 5 cables. Hope you get the nerve to try it..you won't regret it..I'm sure!
