Thought you guys might enjoy a tidbit I emailed to a fellow ACIer Bill. We've been discussing the re opening of my room and a new DLP calibration.
I have a funny story I know you'll enjoy. The HK has this funky auto EQ that I've
yet to try. It's been in 2 channel mode until yesterday with surround off. I remember
reading about being careful with no sub and full range on the mains. It would
supposedly send 20hz to the mains with quite a bit of power when 5.1 dolby
processing is activated. I.E. the LF is routed to the mains at reference level.
Sure enough, my first few moments with DD turned on and an action DVD going,
made for an eye opener moment. I think it was X Men 2 to test blacks for the first time.
Being excited to have surround going again, I pushed the volume up.
OK, the first big LF hit happens and I feel this HUGE rush of air blow up my shorts.
We're talkin' blow dryer amounts. It was spooky! I thought the AC was going nuts,
but under the SPL of the room, I didn't hear my vent. What The Hell!
I turn on the lights and head over to the Panorama on the left. OMG! it's the stinkin'
speaker! The 6 inch driver was moving big time and when I put my face in front of the
port, it blew my hair up. I sit 8 feet or so away from the mains, so you can imagine
my adrenaline as I realize what's going on.
Before I could get to the receiver or remote to turn it down, there was a fart from another hit
in the film. The speakers are fine. They can take a few hits like this, but I wouldn't
leave it that way for long. It's a good thing I've been around so many studio guys and speaker
designers. Otherwise, I'd be freaked.
Man, that was SERIOUS air. A cannon blast in stereo!
I should tell Mike. He'd be pleased.
I now have the setting on small and crossed to 40.
