F10 owners-what cable are you using?

right now (and still experimenting):

1 Twisted Pair of Cat5 solid core cable for each signal path (ie in each spring clip, 4 pairs in total)
maybe this rather high inductance causes the hi freq roll off that i suspect to hear in the F10, bass is not very strong either (small diameter?)

but i started a seperate thread on this anyway...

sincerely

quantumfish,

I've been using CAT6 with good results for months now....it's cheap, easy to work with and tonally nice.  I've not found the bass lacking - but that's a totally subjective thing.  I don't find the high's rolled off....but I'm not sure I'd know until I try another wire with the F10's.

So yesterday, I bought a 5' pair (my Maggies stand to the side of my equipment rack) of Alpha-Core MI-2's with rhodium plated speaker pins.  It's 10 gauge, the lowest inductance in the business (reported to not roll off treble response), quite low resistance (promoting firm bass) and rediculously high capacitance (much higher than even high capacitance CAT5 & 6's, and similar Kimbers)

If the F10's amplifier is up to snuff and don't oscillate due to the extremely high capacitance (energy storage), these cables  should rectify treble rolloff and bass weakness'...at least on paper.

Assuming it doesn't oscillate (and old Superphon amp did when paired with Kimbers, so I am a little wary of high capacitance cables in general) it should give the F10 a little more oomph to drive the Maggies as it will give it a more ideal pathway or corridor.

We'll see soon...$147 shipped for the cables is a worthy experiment.  Again, funny math these days, the cables run 60% of the F10's price

I'm thinking of giving that 12ga magnet wire (solid core, very little, sound-smearing insulation to re-act in conjunction with conductors) a try, too, soon....our own Mad DOg rated Paul Speltz's Anti-Cable (12 ga magnet wire) very highly in a recent Positive Feedback review. I see in an earlier posting in the topic it's being used by kck.  Wonder what his experience has been.

 kck, you out there :?:

I've been using the QED Silver Anniversary cable and I really like the performance and the price is definitely right.  Hey Chairguy you think the cheapo spring clips can hold the 12ga magnet cable adequately or are you using the Bolder adapters? I' ve been wanting to try the Paul Speltz specials myself.  I like the bass even without a sub.  It definitely has gotten better with power conditioning like the Chairguy said it would!!

Normally listen to two channel but added two Ed Frias modified BIC America DV62si's to complement my two mains and split the signal from my Harmon Kardon FL-8550 to utilize the DVD Multi.  It really worked out well!!  More of an array and a fuller effect for two channel stereo and the sweet highs of the BIC America's really blended well!!   Sorry to go off on a tangent!!

Good hershey!

I don't know if 12ga will fit in there, I had trouble squeezing 14 ga CAT6 in my spring clips.  That's one of the reasons I'd like kck to comment...so he can enlighten us as to how he squeezed 'em in there?

Maybe I'll PM him....

Try Radio Shack's flex pins. They're 24 kt gold plated self crimping for various guage wires-then just stick those suckers into the spring clips. Do NOT use Monster Cables pins - too thick. Once that's done though you'll have to weave something ( I use a thin strip of vinyl) around the pins so that they don't touch each other. Check them out- you'll understand what I mean.

Thanks Fab..yeah I've known about those....they look a little cheesy and fit 10-12 ga.  I think they are crimp only.

If I was to buy a quartet of these, I buy Parts Express compression version....I've been told they actually fit 6 ga. cables (perfect if I am to try THHN 6 ga. wire soon):

ha - neat, it'll fit.  That'll be a good experiment.  I suppose the insulation is so thin on this magnet wire (I assume this to be very good - no energy storage or loss as signal passes thru) that it fits the wee JVC clips.

That'll be an experiment soon.  I'm pretty sure I saw magnet wire at a local (very large and well stocked) Ace Hardware shop, too, sparing the need to spend $52 for a 6 lb roll of this stuff.

Hey, the Alpha-Core came in a few days ago.  As with all the Alpha-Core stuff burn-in is very fast...I noted no difference after only 3 hours of buring in the short length of 10ga MI-2 wire.  Fella's we have a synergistic match for the F10 with this one.

I've personally nver noted extreme differences in speaker cables before, none seemed like an upgrade before and all just seemed to have different positive attributes, but this Alpha-Core stuff is seriously good with the JVC.

The amp handles it easily - there is no trace of oscillation - JVC constructed a good amlifier section here. Everything is much fuller and clearer with the Alpha-Core over the CAT-6 with a much more large and deep soundstage.  Bass is markedly better than with the CAT6.  I'm super impressed.

More details later....

Which Alpha Core did you get ?

The 10 gauge, copper MI-2 with rhodium speaker pins.  A 5' run cost me $147 + $7 shipping from Alpha-Core.

I listened to it today and I definitely enjoy the presentation better than with the CAT-6.  The feeling that there is wire connecting the receiver to the speakers is really minimized.  Perhaps their claim of less or no distortion along it's length and that it provides the ideal pathway for high level signals ain't all fluff :smoke:

Of course, it's all mitigated by the fact that we have a cheap crossover and cheap wire from that cheap crossover to the drivers on the Maggie MMG's.  I have recently purchased a crossover made by Madisound without any capacitors - only a couple 12ga. copper inductors and Mills resisters!  I plan to wire it to the drivers with 10ga Alpha-Core now.

An all Alpha-Core set-up from receiver thru crossover and onto the drivers is on the horizon - with what I hope to be a stunningly good outcome    :)
