Recommend DVD player under $500

Hey folks,

I just bought an Infocus 4805 projector and am considering a DVD player upgrade (now have cheap Toshiba).  Anyone have recommendations on a player under $500?  I suppose the picture quality is more important than the sound, but I value both highly.

Thanks,
Beez

Beez:

Oppodigital.com The only player they sell is the OPDV971H. Do you have a DVI-D input on the TV? If so this player costs $200. Most brilliant picture of any DVD player I've had. Highly recommeded!!!

Thanks, Charles - I'll check it out!

Has anyone tried out this one:

I read some chatter about it on the AVS forum...

Your 4805 has a DVI input.

And from what I heard from someone that's got an Oppo & a fairly nice Pioneer they're killer on the DVI output. Better PQ than a Pioneer DV-47Ai when the Oppo is using DVI out.

At some point in the next few weeks I'll be getting a hold of one to try out from someone. I'm hearing that the component outs aren't so great. So I'm not expecting it to be anywhere near my Pioneer DV-AX10 on component video. But from what I'm hearing the Oppo might clean the floor with my AX10 when it's run on DVI.

I'll probably also try it against a Pioneer DV-59AVi using the Pioneer's HDMI output.

The Oppo is the best picture I've had over my 4805 and I've tried a few over the past year. It even bested the Panasonic XP-30 which it replaced.

I bought the NeuNeo DVD player and I'm pretty happy with it.  I have a Toshiba 56" HD ready RPTV CRT and am using my prepro to decode audio via coax.  The picture is exceptional via just 480P and I think 1080i could possibly be exceptional as well. I will need to recalibrate the settings on the TV because it's much darker at this setting.  My TV doesn't have DVI/HDMI input so the component upconversion was important to me.  I've been wanting to try upconversion out for some time and the price was right.  Others have reported a problem with occasional video stuttering but I haven't really experienced this yet. Keep in mind, I've only played 2 full movies and a few demo scenes so far.  I did have a dreadful layer change once (the picture became distorted and frozen for a moment).

The build quality is pretty disappointing.  The remote is truly the cheapest feeling plastic casing that I've ever experienced in electronics. But it works and has all the needed functions.  The actual DVD player also seems somewhat flimsy but it also works just fine.  All the connections are of decent quality.

Sometime I'd like to try the NeuNeo on my friends Marantz projector.  It puts out 720P via component input.

My previous DVD player was a Toshiba 5700 and I was very happy with it for both audio and picture.  This is to give you a sense of where I'm coming from.  I also use a HTPC for DVD playback and my PC via Zoomplayer and Dscaler can also create a spectacular picture.  The NeuNeo has not done as well as I had hoped in playing DVD-r's but I have to try some more.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I'll be using the HDMI connection, which is supposedly a big plus with either the Oppo or NeuNeo.  Maybe I should get them both and just send back the one I like least.  Actually I should check their returns policies first!

Beez,

I have had an OPPO for about a week now. I am REALLY impressed with the picture through DVI.

OPPO is very esay to work with. They do offer a 30 day trial period.

The OPPO has played everything I have put into it so far. No trouble with DVD+Rs, DVD+RWs, Japanese discs etc. It is all region and should play PAL discs with no problems.

I do intend to start work on some mods for it in a couple of weeks. The power supply filtering can be improved. The analog audio section could also use some work, but for $200.00 as a DVD only player through DVI, it is amazing. I think it will be even better after some parts upgrades.
