Anything in Guandzhou?

My wife and I will be finalizing the adoption of our daughter in Guandzhou and I have a few days to kill. I'll be there this Saturday until Wednesday. Anybody know the names of shops and locations here? Or even better yet places to find inexpensive quality gear? Do you think it's worth buying 220V and have it converted in the US to 110V?

This country is amazing and beautiful!

Please have a plate of Hunan beef for me... you will be SO close to Hunan province, and that is my absolute favourite style!

Here're some photos from the 2004 Guangzhou AV Fair from last December (beware 56K users) ....

There's a mall that can reached by the new subway system where there's a floor dedicated to audio/video components....Marantz, B&W, Rotel, etc...   I don't know what the mall is called, but it contains the Japanese department store Justco.

Wow, I would avoid Japanese made gear if you want bargains.  There is a whole lot of Chinese gear to be tried out.  The only problem is that they tend to be heavy since the premium stuff are all built like Krell gear :P

avalon65,

Most of, but not all, the makers of equipment in the Guangdong province are in Shenzhen - about an hour away on harrowing Chinese roads (my years in New York did not prepare me for driving in China - never, oh my!!!!).

There may be some in Guangzhou, but most are in Shenzhen.  I think the other area In China might be well north near Shanghai - but I think those makers there tend to be more computer oriented.

Do some googling on the internet ' audio guangzhou' and you might come up with something.

Factories are funny there - I went to one fella's place that was located on three floors - on the first floor he made 128 and 256 mb F drives, on the second bicycle tubes primarily in aluminum and on the third mops and brooms.  Talk about diverse - same owner same building, all brimming with orders.  The Chinese are so industrious it's amazing.

I stay at the Garden Hotel - I think GZ's only 5 star.  A good place to bed down and enjoy the little city of 6.9 million or so.

Enjoy - congrats on the baby  :)
