X-LS Flatpack/prebuilt cabinet
« on: 12 Mar 2026, 07:31 pm »
A friend of mine is helping me upgrade my retail AV123 X-LS's and everything will be replaced except the cabinet. I plan to give my friend all my existing parts but he will need a cabinet.

Will the flatpack/prebuilt X-LS Encore cabs on GR-Research work with the older retail AV123 X-LS drivers and tweeters??

Thanks!

As far as I am aware almost everything should work.

I believe the diameter of the encore tweeter is different, the older tweeter has eight screws in the face place the encore tweeter has just four. Also, I THINK the encore faceplate is a smaller than the older eight screw, AV123 tweeter. I’ve read that the newer tweeter is also a better performer.

Sounds like a fun project, if you’re able, grab some photos, I’d enjoy seeing the process and hearing your listening impressions of the update!

Enjoy!

Yeah I have the better tweeters already in a box somewhere.... Its beena  few years since I bought all the parts to upgrade mine and life got in the way.  I forget what I need to do to make the new ones fit the old cabinets

If you have the Encore version then you should have the T26 tweeters. If so then the drivers are the same.

Let me know if you want all of the crossover parts for the older model. When we went to this latest version of that same tweeter, the crossover had to be tweaked a little for this new version. I'll need to send you the last crossover using the older version tweeter.

I have AV123 X-LS Classics.  I want to give my friend the internals and I keep the boxes and put the new parts in them.  I just need boxes to house the original parts

So I've done this conversion myself before on some rare piano rosewood X-LS classics.  The tweeter is slightly smaller as Danny and others pointed out.  I had an adapter ring made out of ABS at a local machine shop to fill the gap between the the larger classic tweeter versus the encore.

Also note you'll have to notch out wider inside lip for the tweeter posts.  The old one is narrower and not wide enough for the encore.

This is very doable with a little work.

Thanks,
Robert

You are better off just passing the complete speakers over to your friend and then building a new pair.

I don't have the money to build new cabs.  I have the parts to upgrade what I have and that's what we will be doing.
