Hi from Surprise AZ

Hi, I've been in this hobby of ours since 1957 when my Dad bought his first audio system and told me how to listen to music. I'm originally from NYC, born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens. I bought my first stereo system in 1964 which was a Lafyette integrated, AR4a speakers and a Garrard SL95B. When I got older and started attending concerts with my friends I realized that when I got home there was a music disconnect from the way my stereo sounded to what I heard at concerts and so began my speaker building. With help from neighbors, one of whom was an audio engineer for RCA, I built my 1st speaker in 1967 when I was 15. I used 2x12 bass guitar speakers and horns for the mids and highs all made by Utah which were extremely efficient and allowed me to listen to the Beatles, the DC5, Rolling Stones, Animals at high volume!, the way rock should be listened to - LOUD!!

When I retired to AZ I started building speakers again about 10 years ago, appalled at the high cost of speakers. I had a pair of used Revel Ultima Studios at the time and used them as a benchmark. It took me 4 builds and many different drivers to get the sound I wanted and according to an audio buddy of mine who told me that I finally had a speaker that sounded as good as the Revels using a Heil H3, Dayton Audio 7" Reference woofer and 2x10" Dayton Woofers in an Isobaric configuration in a separate cab that also served as speaker stands - all Golden Ratio cabs.

I forgot to mention that I was in the music biz as a photographer working for CBS Records (I have a BFA in photography) and as a photo editor for a small music magazine. I went to about 1000+ concerts in a few short years. I sold my first photo when I was 17 for an article about The Who when I photographed at the Fillmore East in May 1969. The second photo I sold was used on the reissue of 'Live at the Regal' by BB that I took in August 1969.

My system is really great nowadays and I am proud of it. More to come but my puppy is making it difficult to sit and write.

I love your passion for audio, and willingness to have a go at building your own speakers. And a little help from a pro never hurts. You've certainly been an audiophile for a lot longer, and seen about 1000 more concerts than me. So your ears must be very attuned. Anyway, you've had an interesting life's journey. Enjoy the forum!

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.
