KEF R3 speaker capacitor mods
« on: 31 Jul 2025, 05:58 am »
I am a newbie with little technical expertise and would appreciate advice from experienced speaker modders, in particular the KEF R3.

I would like to upgrade some caps in the cross-over of the KEF R3 speakers but am unsure how to to remove the crossover boards from the very tight space available to get the job done.

And I'm also interested in getting the detailed crossover schematics.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,
humbleguy2

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

The original caps were voiced by the factory to match the drivers, changing the caps you will get a diferent output sound.

We'll need pictures of the inside to assist you. The parts used by KEF will be inexpensive, with electrolytic caps in the woofer circuit along with sand cast resistors in both circuits. Both of those are for saving money and should be replaced. I replaced all the parts on a crossover in a pair of KEF 350's and I just matched values and ordered Dayton poly caps and precision resistors and air core inductors from Parts Express. Made a world of difference. I spent a total of $50 for both speakers. Getting rid of the electrolytic caps and sand cast resistors will make a noticeable improvement. When I did the 350 crossover, the values were printed on the board.
