Making GR Diffusers
« on: 29 Mar 2025, 02:12 am »
Simple build here: I got premade wood frames from Acoustimac which I sanded and painted black.

The styrofoam mounted and glued into the frames.

I found this paint which I tested on a spare piece of styrofoam to make sure it doesn't melt the diffusers. It dries quick and has a decently nice finish.

I only Finished one of them.

2 will mount to the wall, but the other 2 need to go in front of a sliding door so I need to work out some kind of stand for them.

I'll post more when I've got them all done and setup in room.

FYI, I was told NOT to use an aerosol paint.  I'm glad that is working out. Great find with those frames to make that easy.

position for best performance.

These panels can be painted to better suite the aesthetic choices/needs of your room.
Stick to water-based acrylic or latex paint.
(Solvent-based paints will destroy the foam)

FYI for all... this is from the guy who designed these... noting about painting and how it effects these...

"To improve mid and upper bass absorption, you can mount cardboard, Masonite or thin MDF to the back of the diffuser effectively mass loading them.  Best method is to use acrylic latex flooring adhesive for a permanent solution.  To affect a proof of theory use double sided carpet tape to test for efficacy.  Easy to do and repeatable for different masses.

Also,  HF absorption is influenced by painted finish.  One coat of flat paint pretty much results in the same characteristics as the raw foam.  Conversely, 4 coats of gloss paint will give very high reflectivity in the highs.  It's a logic game.  In my room (currently in destruction) 2 coats of eggshell gives the most even diffusion.  YMMV..."

the shipping charges are high. product prices were fair but like $60 shipping on around $110 of product was too much for me. I delete my shopping cart items.

Or, "making my sound better cost me $170"...

I just bought 16 more 2'x4' panels so I have enough for a second room.

They work.

It's just the unfortunate cost of shipping large, bulky products, even though they weight next to nothing.
We can technically ship up to 3 pairs of the 48x24 panels in a single box, but the dimensions puts them into a size category that shoots shipping costs from $60-80 to nearly $180-200+
Which means it's cheaper to ship 4 pairs in 2 boxes than it is 3 pairs in a single.

Not clear on prices here. It was mentioned twice, $110.00 for product plus shipping. That must be per panel since
GR's site shows $450.00 for 4 plus shipping.

Unless these are proven to accurately diffuse critical frequencys, seems rather pricey.

Just an idea, but if these or another materal were made such that they could fold like an accordian, maybe shipping cost would drop significantly.

Correct. We ship them based on what is the most economical options for shipping.

You would need to get into contact with Dave Elledge, formerly the owner Pi Audio Group, as he is the one who originally designed them, and he's done a lot of work developing rooms & treatments for local recording & mixing studios and other venues in New Mexico.

Potentially, but that means designing & producing a product likely to be heavier & more expensive to produce, to save on shipping dimensions, so its kind of a wash.

Here's what both look like together

And the other side where they're wall mounted

I'm using these metal cleets that came with the frames to mount them.

Most notably is a wider soundstage. Also while it didn't make it any deeper the depth seems to be more precise. And lastly the room is a bit livelier after removing the absorber that these diffusers replaced.

Precision of depth?  Does it improve layering or simply move the plane than the sounds reside on?
