Cerwin Vega D3 Upgrade
« on: 13 Feb 2025, 01:03 pm »
Hello,

I’m new to the site, landed here after finding Danny’s YouTube video regarding his work on upgading a customers D-3.

I am interested in obtaining one of these kits for my speakers.

I’m also interested if any member has put one of these kits kits in their D-3’s and how they responded?

Thank you

Fun speakers. D-3's were my first speaker purchase and I mowed a lot of lawns and tossed a lot of hay bales to get em.  Of course, to my seventeen year old ears the thumping bass and screaming highs was true high fidelity! LOL And man could they crank. I used to set them both up right in front of my drum set and play along to music and it was like I had pro stage monitors. In spite of all the issues Danny said they have, they gave me years of listening pleasure until Greyhound Freight banged em up when I had them shipped home from college.  Make no mistake, they planted a seed that later blossomed into a true love for the hifi hobby. I imagine Danny's kit has them sounding as good as they can be...and for the price of the kit, you'll  probably wind up with a pretty impressive and VERY fun set of speakers provided you're not a tweeter snob. ;)

Thanks all, for viewing and for the welcomes to the site and forum.

After watching Danny’s YouTube video, his assessment of the stock D3’s, the speaker characteristics, the stock crossover, the box acoustics, wiring, etc.. upgrading the crossover and more would seem to be a big value add, as well as improve the sound characteristics of the speakers.

What I’m trying to understand is the cost of his very cool, custom upgrades, is worth it for these speakers?
I only paid $350 (w/reformed woofers), so spending another $460 is a significant commitment.

I’d value hearing from a member or customer that’s sprung for the upgrade, was it worth it in terms of improvements and would they do it again?

BTW… I do like them, they’re actually the best speakers I’ve ever owned, not that I’ve owned anything worthy of this community.

I am the same with my upgrades on CV's. I am recapping Re30 and Se 280's plus refoaming both sets of drivers. New to this but very active

Interesting pair of CV's there, those are clearly not CV woofers. I'm preparing to apply many of Danny's concepts, component, wire, connectors, etc... to my collection of CV's. I'd be interested to know how your efforts proceed.
