Mini Maggie System
« on: 30 Aug 2025, 12:53 pm »
Many years ago I went to The Listening Room down in Maryland and they had a Mini Maggie System playing and I was just astonished at how good it sounded.
He was using a laptop, a Cambridge integrated amp and a small REL sub with everything set up on/under a table.  The sound filled the whole room, it was really impressive.

The idea got shelved but I never forgot about it and I kept some components in reserve just for a future Mini Maggie System.
I decided it's now or never so found a set on USAudiomart from a gentleman who is retiring and had them sent up.
While they were en route I found a cabinet on Facebook which was made by an Amish carpenter and cut the majority of the back out for some air flow and I purchased a used REL T7 subwoofer.

The speakers showed up and I hooked them up to a Rega Apollo-R CD player, a Sonic Frontiers SFL-2 preamp, a Conrad-johnson MF2275 amplifier, an APC H-15 power conditioner and made some additional Supra LoRad power cords.  The speakers are hooked up with Kimber 8TC speaker wire and after some futzing around, I replaced the silver interconnects with some inexpensive Blue Jeans cables as the sound was just too bright.
To give myself some room, I removed a leaf from the table, got some small speaker stands and stuck them up on some small boxes.

One speaker kept cutting out which drove me crazy for two days.
After eliminating every possibility, out to the garage for some surgery.
It turned out to be a bad crimp on a connector on the fuse plate so I soldered on a new connector and problem solved.

I had to laugh, when the sub showed up I had to play with all of the settings (of course).  I wound up putting them right back to where the previous owner had them.
REL never got back to me on which sub to use with the Mini Maggies but the T7 I picked worked out just right.  Not too small, not too overpowering and it just blends in perfectly.

It all came together really well.  I've got a small quilt and a Frank Zappa tote bag in the mail so I'll throw them up on the walls to deaden the sound a little bit more.  As it is, it's not annoyingly bright sounding and there's great detail from these little guys.  Songs with heavy bass tracks are a lot of fun.
If you spend a lot of time at a desk, these are worth looking into.
One evening it struck me that they're like sitting inside of a giant pair of headphones.

Wow, great score! I heard the MMs in Mark Winey's office at Magenpan, and they were remarkable.

The problem is they're in my new office and I haven't run power there yet. :-) I hurt my thumb and I couldn't work for months, so I have a backlog of half-completed projects -- my listening room is full of kitchen cabinets I put together, etc. Working on the cabinets now.

I had a little time this afternoon so did a preamp shoot out.
I replaced the Conrad-johnson CT-5 with this Sonic Frontiers SFL-2 on the 3.7s.
It was a quick shoot out, the Sonic Frontiers piece will stay with the Mini Maggies.  It just didn't really cut it with the big boys.

Hey Steve, Congrats. Thats a very nice desktop system you put together.. It actually looks more like a full blown stereo system to me.. Sweet.. Happy listening buddy.

Thank you.
I spent the past few days looking at preamps and tube integrated amps and then decided to try some new tubes in the Sonic Frontiers preamp.
That did the trick.

For anyone considering these, I've found what works best is ribbons on the inside, minimal damping material behind the speakers, no resistors.

How far do you have them from the wall?

Satellites 20", DMW 27".

Given the way this room is set up, that's about as far out as I can pull the table and still be able to walk around the furniture.

I wonder if diffusers would work. Not QRD's, which don't work that close, but old-fashioned curved ones. Guess absorption is better, it isn't like they're going to create much room ambiance anyway.

When the weather turns cold I'll be sticking some plants back there, I've got some avocado trees out on the sun porch right now.
I just noticed these are using wire on the mylar, I wonder if the current ones are foil?

I did some experimenting after work with the Minis.
Tried 1 Ohm resistors, didn't care for it.
Tried a length of speaker wire in place of the metal jumper, went back to the metal jumper.

I guess the best advice I can give is to pick something with some warmth to the sound as you're basically wearing 3.7s as headphones.
Eventually, I'm going to replace what I'm using and buy a used VTL IT85 integrated amp.  I've got a pretty good idea what tubes to use.

What I've got is clear as a bell but it can be fatiguing after a while as it really likes some volume but it's just so much in your face.
The Sonic Frontiers has a 3rd row center presentation and I really need to move back around 10 rows.

If you're using them for whole room sound, that wouldn't present an issue.

I had some spare time this evening so decided to see about some different tubes in the Sonic Frontiers SFL-2 preamp.
This takes 8 tubes and the front four (VL1-2, V1-2) are the most important for the sound quality.

It originally came with Voskhod tubes which were really dynamic but the midrange has always seemed to be lacking, the bass and treble were really good.
I tried some Amperex Bugle Boys 6DJ8 and they had a bit too much bass, plenty of midrange but the treble was a bit rolled off.
Then I tried some current EH 6922s and they're just right.  The presentation is balanced, really good soundstage depth and there's no loss of detail.

Never one to leave well enough alone, I purchased 5 new JAN Sylvania 6DJ8s and put in four of them.
Just perfect!

Good question.
