Tidal not outputting full resolution on iPhone
« on: 20 Jan 2025, 09:11 pm »
iPhone 15, Tidal App, FiiO BTR15 Dongle DAC... everything fully updated

Problem: When playing music on the Tidal app, the FiiO will only display 44.1 resolution regardless of the resolution of the track.

Troubleshooting:  I checked and double checked all settings and updates.  I played hi-res from Qobuz and got it to display 96.  I played the same track using mConnect running Tidal, and it displayed 96.  SO, it is only the Tidal native app that will not pass full resolution.

Any ideas?

Sorry you didn't get any replies.  I'm using a Sabaj dongle DAC with headphones for casual listening.  I've been thru Tidal, Qobuz, now on Amazon Music because they gave me three months at $2.99 per.  My little dac never displays anything besides the blue led that indicates red book resolution, although I do hear a difference between hi rez versions and red book.  So I've stopped worrying about the displayed resolution.  For critical listening I use LPs and CDs in the big rig.

This seems to be due to bugs in the Tidal app not communicating correctly with the iOS audio APIs. Tidal will likely need to fix its app.

On iOS, audio output is set to 16-bit/44.1kHz or 16-bit/48kHz by default unless an app enables higher-resolution audio. Some apps (such as Qobuz or Apple Music) request the iOS audio subsystem to open the DAC at the native sample rate, allowing 24-bit/192kHz playback. If an app like Tidal has bugs, then a 192/24 track displays 44/16 on the DAC.

Just in case, have you looked at the Audio & Playback section of Tidal’s settings? Under both Mobile data streaming and WiFi streaming, is the quality set to Max?

Have you tried Qobuz or Apple Music (when set to Hi-Res Lossless)? Got it. You did.

Tidal support says they are "investigating".
