I just had to mention what a difference the Stratos Extreme makes over the Stratos with cap upgrade only (at least with the Lorelei's).

This isn't meant as a full review and I am not an audiophile.  I have no technical/electronic/scientific background.  I am not a musician, professional or amateur.  I am just an aging hippie who loves music and spends far more time in front of his stereo than in front of his TV.

Years ago I owned a Stratos with cap upgrade.  It was way overbuilt, sounded great, and couldn't be touched in it's price class.  I finally sold it to try out tubes for a while though.

While I enjoyed some of the tubed stuff I listened to, I also missed what good ss could do.  I also missed the simplicity (no biasing, etc.) of solid state.

I recently decided to return to an ss system.  There was no question that within my budget, Odyssey was the way to go.  Klaus provides exceptional quality and I think among the best value in audio.

I took delivery of my new Lorelei speakers but was still saving up for the amp.  Klaus also delivered a loaner Stratos and and loaner preamp.  This is unheard of customer service for most of you.  For those of us fortunate enough to live local to Klaus Bunge, this is his common business practice.  He really takes care of his customers and his reputation in that regard is well deserved.

The Lorelei's sounded great as all Odyssey products do.  I saved my money and ordered another Stratos but decided to ask Klaus for his extreme mods if he still did them.  I understand they are time consuming and he doesn't advertise his mods as he would not be able to keep up with the orders (I think he will still do them for members of this forum but keep it on the down low  ).

I took delivery of the Stratos Extreme a couple of weeks ago.  It is still breaking in but the whole point of my post here is that it really made a profound difference.  From my limited experience I am used to degrees of "subtlety" when it comes to audio improvements.  For what little Klaus charges for the Extreme mods, I expected some slight, subtle, improvement eventually, after the amp broke in.

I was taken aback at the immediate improvements between the Stratos Plus and the Stratos Extreme.  I don't know if it has to do with a quieter background or what, but the already good soundstaging of the Lorelei's improved noticeably.  The soundstage took on a bigger, more three-dimensional presentation, with the ability to pull a "ventriloquist" act on some recordings.

Bass was already good but articulation and weight improved noticeably.

The amp (and speakers for that matter) are still breaking in but with these kinds of immediate improvements, I just wanted to post a quick note.  If you are considering an inexpensive (relatively speaking) upgrade in the near future, the Extreme mods are far more profound than I ever would have imagined.  Highly recommended.

P.S.  I think the mods add at least ten pounds to the amps weight so have fun moving it around!

Chuck,

Thanks for sharing your story and congrats on the new amp.  My experiences with Klaus are the same - a man of integrity and high character (I think the customer service is just a result of these character traits).

I have a pair of the standard monos and the extreme monos.  Major difference between the two IMO.  I have been tempted for a long time to upgrade the monos -  I don't as yet have the rest of my second system in need of the additional power/finesse.

Agreed on all fronts.  I had a stereo extreme that I had modded to a mono extreme and purchased a 2nd mono extreme to pair with it.  Wow.  Noticable improvement in bass, detail and dynamics.  Worthwhile move!

Thanks

Thanks guys.  I was a little hesitant to post anything on this.  I remember reading what a big difference the upgrade made a few years back when Klaus first offered the Extreme upgrade.

I was a little skeptical at the time and didn't trust audio "salesmen".

I may be a day late and a dollar short but I felt I had to say it.  The Extreme upgrade really makes a much bigger difference than I thought it could.

And having dealt with Klaus several times now, I can say that I am still skeptical of audio salesmen...but Klaus is no audio salesman.  He truly loves music and is genuinely passionate about his products.  He is a business owner.  He has been around a long time and he is serious about being around a lot longer.

He knows there is no shortcut.  He takes exceptional care of his customers, treating them like extended family.  And he is not afraid of hard work.  Did you guys see what went into his New York show?

Anyway, next time Klaus says "WOW this makes a big difference!"  I will know it is not hype.  I trust his ears and I trust his integrity.

I am glad I found may way back to Odyssey after my foray into vacuum tubed products.

Chuck - this is kind of off topic, but do you have any experience with Jolida's JD-100 CDP?  I just picked one up (with level 1 mods) on Ebay for a good price (the auction ended mid-day Mother's day).  I had a friend over a while back to listen to the Odysseys.  He brought a stock JD-100 and I really liked the sound.

For the audition, my system was set up in a less than perfect room.  I have beeen recovering from a frozen pipe issue (lol-not viagra) that wiped out my prime listening space in the basement.  Anyway, I am doing a lot of the work on the basement myself (gutted, replaced all the plumbing in the house, have run all new electrical - dedicated line for audio), and as a reward I am looking to do some upgrades.  My guess is that the Jolida will sound even better in a room better suited for audio.  The Jolida will be paid for by selling a current CDP and an old 5 channel amp (anyone want to buy a Sunfire Cinema Grand?).  The leftover 'take' plus a liitle more will hopefully upgrade my Tempests, upgrade my cart, and possibly my speakers.

I am in full negotiations with my better half, but since I upgraded her jewerly this past year I am hopeful.  I don't have a lot of experience with tubes - seems to me that the power/detail/inherent soundstaging of Klaus's gear will be a good match with the Jolida.  It might even get me to buy a few more CDs.     Any thoughts from you or other folks here are appreciated.

Thank YOU Klaus for making great audio products reachable for people with real world budgets!  And congrats on your New York show.  It looks like your new line of in-wall speakers are getting a lot of attention (well deserved attention no doubt).

Hi Don,

I have not heard the tubed Jolida with the ss Odyssey system...but now you have me thinking about it...

Hopefully someone has heard this combination and can jump in here.

Get some good power cables ala Venhaus (http://venhaus1.com/VH_Audio_Test.html), and the sound from the Odyssey amps will get even better.....

Hey Don I've been using a Jolida JD-100 with my Odyssey Stereo Stratos (first with cap upgrade now extreme) and Tempest for about a year and a half. It's a great combination I don't have the mods on my CDP but I did replace the stock tubes with Sylvania 5751 triple mica gold pins. SWEET!

Hey rescq,

Thanks for the reply.  The Jolida seemed like a good match with the accuracy of the Odyssey gear.  I have the Xtremes/Tempest matched with Dynaudio's Confidence C1 (may be upgraded to the C2 soon :notworthy:).  As you know, the amps/pre are powerful/accurate/yet emotionally involving.  The Dyns are the finest speakers I have ever owned - can't say enough there.  I think the Jolida will be a plus in my system - the tubes should add a layer or two of softness that I need on the digital side.  After Klaus brought me over to the 'analog side' I have listened to very few CDs.  I'll let you know my impressions when I get the CDP.  I am a tough critic.  When my friend brought his JD-100 over, I loved the 'synergy' with my system.  I look forward to putting it though the paces.  Again, I appreciate your post.

Musky_Don,

I use the Jolida cdp with a Tempest/Stratos combo, as well as cryoed VenHaus PCs on the aforementioned gear. Very nice combo. FYI - I found the Jolida benefits from base dampening (I use granite under and on top), upgraded tubes ( I use Sylvania Gold Label JHS 5751WA triple mica blackplates), and Walker SST on the tube pins, RCA plugs, and IEC prongs.

Of course, if you had the cash, you could always leap to a Meridian G08 cdp!

Happy listening!

Dave,

Forgive me - I had forgotten that you had a Jolida... I remember now when we were talking about carts fot the Rega I had looked at your system.  I received the player on Friday.  Nice sounding - I see what you mean regarding the bass - it is good, nice extension, a little damping would not hurt.  Need to listen in a bigger room though (I am working on a basement rehab/remodel project that will never end...the end result will be a 15x24 space with the same open to a pool table area - basically a 30x24 room) before I start any tweaks.  I have spent a few hours doing comps with my analog set-up (Klaus you created a monster), I'd say it a draw at this point (is there a Frog in my future?  take that you digital prince).  In terms of extended sessions, the Rega wins hands down (still a bit of fatigue w/the Jolida).  I will pm you with q's regarding tubes.  I look forward to some experimentation.

Overall, I would say that the Jolida is a nice match with the Tempest/Extremes.  I have heard better in terms of detail on the CDP side, but not for the price and the Jolida sucks you into the music (though a bit forward on some cds).  My guess is that the Odyssey gear provides just enough accuracy with emotion 'solid statewise' to let the Jolida do its part right and not get choked up on the details... they are there with Klaus's gear.

OT:  My Brother picked up a TT from a client for free - an old Yamaha TP 211.  Frankly, it looked like a POS except that it had a nice wood base and had it's own dust cover (imagine that?).  Anyway, we spent the good part of today tweaking it.  Put a $100 Grado cart on it, replaced the belt, soldered some new interconnects, and dampened the TT with some caulk.  The most fun I have had in a while - the TT sounds great for $150 in parts.  Long live vinyl.

Best regards,

Don
