Amp-Speaker Matching
« on: 21 Jun 2024, 03:12 pm »
New to the Audio Circle community and about 3 years into a rediscovery of hi-fi and system building. Once I overcame the Big Box brand mentality, I feel I lucked out on my first major purchase of a Unison Research Unico Primo integrated amp. It’s paired well with everything matched with it thus far: NHT Zeros, KEF Q150s, and by far the best, Monitor Audio 6G Silver 100s. I was pleased to see Zero Fidelity do such a positive review of the Unico Primo after I’d bought it and pleasantly surprised to hear him specifically mention a great pairing with the Buchardt s400 mkII during that speaker’s review. I’m here to share my experiences that bridge the analog ‘80s (a Technics setup with tape deck) to the at times confounding digital present. Also, to peruse and post to the trading board as the biggest mistake I’ve made thus far was rushing in too fast to secure “good deals” rather than good fits—and throwing the original boxes away (total noob!).

Welcome!

There is a mystery to amp/speaker matching which is one reason why I buy active monitors.  Let the manufacturer do the matching and audition them together.  With Class D amps it seems less important, but many other reasons for going active.

We've all been seduced by "good deals".....no need to feel alone in that regard. When speaker shopping, my priority is finding the impedance curve data of the speaker candidate. Is it smooth staying above 4 ohms or is it a jagged mess dipping to 2 ohms on occasion? This I value far more than simply looking at a speaker's efficiency. The caveat being it's not always easy to find a given speaker's impedance curve data. Being a tube amp guy myself this is especially critical, but I can't help but feel that most any amp will benefit and synergize better with a speaker sporting a friendly impedance curve.

One of my systems is like JLM, I use Roland D8 powered monitors and try bunches of preamps and sources there first, then if I like to move to my reference system in living room and see if I like it there, if not keep on office system or resell since I mainly buy used.

That's cool. So you use the active Rolands as an amp/speaker "reference" to test preamps/sources, take initial impressions, and then move it to the main setup if it moves you?
