So I am using a yamaha universal player as my cd player and i noticed a strange thing happening. I have it hooked up to the dvd imputs but if i switch to the recevier (Yamaha RX-777 stereo 100 watts/ch) to cd and turn it WAY up I can hear the cd that is playing real softly. What up with that?? Cheap components?

When you say the player is hooked up to the DVD inputs of the receiver, do you mean the 6 channel analog inputs or the digital input?

Assuming you mean the 6 channel analog inputs, what you are hearing is called crosstalk. It is caused by less than perfect isolation between the analog inputs of the receiver. Most entry level and mid range receiver exhibit this, to one degree or another.

Could be a flaw in the muting circuit. I had the same problem with my old Rotel 2 ch receiver. Rotel had already sent out a notice about it. I took it into the dealer and they fixed it under warranty.
