How to remove XO board?
« on: 1 Jan 2003, 02:04 am »
Does anyone have experience removing the XO board of the nOrh 9 (or other drum speakers) from the inside of the cabinet.  It seems to be held on by a lot of glue!  I am planning on having the capacitors and resistors upgraded to Sonicaps and Mills resistors by Jeff Glowacki of www.soniccraft.com but first need to find a way to remove the XO board.  I don't want to risk damaging the XO board.

If you want to see what the XO board of my 9.0 looks like, check out my album in the Gallery.  My XO uses Bennic capacitors; other 9.0s have Multicaps.

Thanks a lot!

I am assuming the xover board is the same size as the 7.0's?

If so, even if you can dislodge it, how are you going to get out through the woofer cuttout?

They can be removed easily

I removed my Xovers from my marble 9.0s quite easily. They must be levered off using a short screw driver and yes they fit through the holes.

Mine were held in place by a single allen head bolt.  No glue between the board and the drum.

Thanks, guys, I will check for a screw holding down the board before I start prying with a screwdriver!  I do know that Guan's XO boards are held down with a LOT of glue -- mine don't have glue showing so maybe they are screwed down...

Maybe the glue you're thinking of is the marble base plate that they installed to mount the "nut" that the bolt threads into?  That's my guess.

my 6.5 & 6.9 drums both have the x-over glued in as well with some kind of foamy looking resin (?)

mbarnes is at CES, but I will venture a guess that there is more than one technique used to affix the boards by nOrh. So see which one applies to you.

Also make sure the upgrade is really an upgrade, and that it would make a difference for all the trouble, money and risk of damage...

JQP has a good point.  Although I didn't try changing any parts on the passive XO I did bi-amp my 7.0s with an outboard active XO and the result was not good.  I don't know what the slope comes out to be with the passive, but apparently 24db\octave isn't right for the Norhs.  I couldn't quite get a sound I was happy with.  Not to say that with the right equipment it couldn't be done, but I got the impression that the passive XO just sounded more "right" than my monkeying with it.  Your mileage may vary.

Hi.  No update yet.  I got caught up breaking in my Mensa and some new cables.  Then, I've just now ordered a power filter/balanced power supply (Blue Circle Music Ring) so I'm not going to look into the XO upgrade until after I've broken in the power filter and feel the need for a further upgrade (particularly since my speakers would be down for a couple of weeks during the XO upgrade and then would need a few hundred hours of break in after!).
